Biography

Short Description

Hierotheos the Thesmothete (Greek: Ἱερόθεος ὁ Θεσμοθέτης), also called Hierotheos of Athens, is a saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church who, according to later ecclesiastical tradition, was the first bishop of the Christian community in Athens. The epithet Thesmothete denotes a junior archon of classical Athens, a magistrate concerned with the recording and interpretation of law. Tradition places him among the members of the Areopagus who heard the Apostle Paul preach on the Hill of Ares, an episode narrated in the Acts of the Apostles and usually dated to the mid-first century. In that account he is grouped with Dionysius the Areopagite as one of the earliest Athenian converts of the apostolic age. No contemporary first-century source names him, and nothing reliable is known of his parentage, birthplace, or early life beyond this later identification with the Athenian magistracy and the Areopagus.

Almost all narrative detail attached to Hierotheos comes from the Corpus Areopagiticum, a collection of Greek theological treatises and letters that circulated under the name of Dionysius the Areopagite. In those writings Hierotheos appears as Dionysius’s teacher, a hierarch of exceptional mystical insight who was at times rapt into divine ecstasy. The same corpus ascribes to him two lost works, the Elements of Theology and Hymns of Yearning, and presents him as an inspired hymnographer. Eastern Christian tradition further holds that he was present in Jerusalem at the Dormition of the Theotokos, standing among the apostles and singing hymns of unusual beauty. Later Orthodox liturgical texts commemorate him on that basis as a holy hierarch and teacher. A separate Syriac mystical treatise, the Book of the Holy Hierotheos, associated with the monk Stephen bar Sudaili in the fifth or sixth century, shows that the name continued to carry authority in later mystical literature, though that work is not evidence for a first-century Athenian bishop.

Modern historical scholarship treats the Corpus Areopagiticum as the product of an anonymous Syrian author of the late fifth or early sixth century rather than of the Athenian convert mentioned in Acts. On that view, the Hierotheos of the Dionysian writings is likely a literary or legendary figure, constructed in part to give the corpus an apostolic pedigree. Independent documentary evidence for a bishop of that name in first-century Athens is lacking; later episcopal lists of Athens include him on the strength of the Areopagitic tradition rather than of contemporary records. Dates of birth and death, family circumstances, and place of burial are unrecorded in any source that can be treated as historically reliable.

Despite the scarcity of verifiable biographical data, Hierotheos has been venerated for many centuries in the Eastern Orthodox Church. His principal feast is observed on 4 October. He is commemorated as a bishop of Athens, a teacher of Dionysius, and an inspired hymnographer, not as a pope or patriarch, and no religious order, marriage, or children are documented for him. The historical individual, if he existed apart from the later legend, remains known only through hagiographical and mystical literature of a much later date.
