Biography

Short Description

Hildegard Burjan was born Hildegard Freund on 30 January 1883 in Görlitz, then in the Kingdom of Prussia within the German Empire, into a liberal, assimilated Jewish family. At a time when few universities admitted women, she studied philosophy, literature, and the social sciences at the University of Zurich and was awarded a doctorate in 1908. In 1907 she married the Hungarian industrialist Alexander Burjan; the couple settled in Vienna. A life-threatening kidney illness and surgery in 1908–1909 led her through a spiritual crisis to reception into the Roman Catholic Church in 1909. She and her husband had one daughter, Elisabeth.

After her conversion she turned academic interest in the social question into organized work for women homeworkers, mothers, and families living in industrial poverty. Before the First World War she helped found Christian associations of female homeworkers in Vienna, seeking fairer pay, legal protection, and mutual aid for women who labored in isolation under exploitative conditions. During the war she took part in relief work. In 1919, amid the social collapse that followed the end of the Habsburg monarchy, she founded Caritas Socialis, a community of women committed to professional social work in the spirit of Christian charity; the community later developed into a religious congregation. She insisted that personal charity be joined to justice and to trained, competent service.

When Austrian women obtained the vote, Burjan was elected in 1919 to the Constituent National Assembly on the Christian Social Party list, becoming one of the first women to sit in an Austrian parliament. During a term that lasted until 1920 she pressed for legislation protecting mothers, children, and workers, and argued that public life should be shaped by a Christian understanding of the common good. She did not pursue a long parliamentary career, preferring to work through Caritas Socialis and related Catholic social initiatives. Throughout the 1920s, despite recurring illness, she remained a leading figure in Viennese Catholic social action and an unusual example of a married woman and mother exercising public leadership in the Church’s social apostolate.

Chronic kidney disease ended her life in Vienna on 11 June 1933, at the age of fifty. Her reputation for holiness and for a life that united family, professional social work, and political responsibility grew in the following decades. Pope Benedict XVI beatified her on 29 January 2012; the rite was celebrated in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 12 June. She is remembered as a pioneer of the lay apostolate, of Catholic social work in Austria, and of women’s participation in democratic political life.
