Biography

Short Description

Hippolytus of Rome was a Christian theologian, presbyter, and ecclesiastical writer active in the city of Rome during the late second and early third centuries. He is widely regarded as the most significant theologian of the Roman church in the third century and one of the foremost Greek-speaking Christian authors of his time. Little can be established with certainty about his origins or early life. The fact that he wrote in Greek, together with later notices such as the ninth-century description by Photius of Constantinople that he had been a disciple of Irenaeus of Lyons, has led many scholars to suggest that he may have come from the eastern Mediterranean, perhaps from Asia Minor or Egypt. No ancient source records a precise place or date of birth, and estimates that place his birth around the year 170 remain conjectural.

In Rome, Hippolytus served as a presbyter and emerged as a leading spokesman for a rigorist party within the Christian community. He came into conflict with Pope Zephyrinus and, more sharply, with Pope Callixtus I. Hippolytus accused Callixtus of doctrinal unsoundness, charging him with modalist or Sabellian tendencies regarding the Trinity, and of undue leniency in the church's penitential practice, especially in the readmission of those guilty of grave sins. The controversy produced a lasting schism. Hippolytus was apparently chosen by his adherents as a rival bishop of Rome and is therefore frequently described in later historical writing as the first antipope. The division continued under Popes Urban I and Pontian.

In 235, in the course of the persecution under the emperor Maximinus Thrax, both Pope Pontian and Hippolytus were arrested and deported to the mines of Sardinia, an event recorded in the Chronography of 354. Later tradition holds that the two men were reconciled before they died. Both perished in exile on the island. Their bodies were afterwards brought back to Rome, and Hippolytus was buried in a cemetery on the Via Tiburtina that subsequently took his name. He was honored as a martyr from an early period.

Hippolytus was a prolific writer. Among the works associated with his name are the Refutation of All Heresies, also called the Philosophumena, a lengthy polemic against Gnostic and other heterodox teachings; commentaries on Scripture, including those on Daniel and the Song of Songs; a world chronicle; and the Apostolic Tradition, a document of great importance for the history of early Christian liturgy, ordination, baptism, and the Eucharist, although modern scholars have questioned whether the entire corpus belongs to a single author. A marble statue of a seated figure, unearthed in 1551 near the Via Tiburtina and inscribed with a list of writings, was long taken to represent Hippolytus, though the sculpture may originally have depicted a female personification and only later been adapted to his cult.

Medieval legend conflated Hippolytus of Rome with another martyr of the same name, a figure portrayed as a prison official converted by Saint Lawrence and put to death by being torn apart by horses. That legendary story shaped later iconography and popular devotion. In the Roman Catholic Church, Hippolytus is commemorated jointly with Pope Pontian on 13 August. Eastern Christian calendars have kept his memory on additional or alternative dates, including 30 January. Despite uncertainties surrounding his biography and the exact extent of his literary output, he remains a central figure for the study of early Roman Christianity, Trinitarian controversy, church order, and liturgical origins.
