Biography

Short Description

Saint Hope, called Spes in Latin and Elpis in Greek, is commemorated in Christian hagiography as a child martyr of Rome and as one of three sisters—Faith, Hope, and Charity—who suffered with their mother Sophia. The legend, preserved in a Greek passio of uncertain date and in later Latin recensions, presents Sophia as a Christian widow who instructed her daughters in the faith and brought them to the imperial capital. The girls are described as still in childhood at the time of their arrest, Hope being the middle sister. The events are set in the second century, in the reign of the emperor Hadrian, but the narrative is a product of later pious literature rather than of contemporary record.

According to the traditional story, the family was accused of being Christian and was examined by the emperor himself. When they refused to offer sacrifice to the gods of Rome, the sisters were separated from their mother and subjected to a succession of tortures, including scourging and burning, before they were beheaded. Hope is said to have remained steadfast, encouraged by Sophia, who was compelled to watch her children die. Sophia herself was not executed; the legend states that she died of grief three days later while praying at their grave. The bodies of the martyrs were buried outside the city along the Via Aurelia. Versions of the tale vary in detail, and some Western martyrologies list the sisters without their mother on a different day from Sophia.

Veneration of Hope is inseparable from that of her legendary sisters and mother. In the Roman Martyrology the three virgins Faith, Hope, and Charity are entered on 1 August, with a notice that they received the crown of martyrdom under Hadrian; Sophia is commemorated on 30 September. The Byzantine tradition keeps a joint feast of Sophia and her three daughters on 17 September. Relics attributed to the group have been claimed by churches in Rome and in other parts of Europe, though the chains of custody are late and cannot be verified. Icons, especially in the East, show Sophia with her three daughters holding crosses or palms of martyrdom. The story was used catechetically to present even young children as models of constancy.

Modern historical scholarship treats the account as legendary. No second-century Roman source mentions the family, and the names Faith, Hope, Charity, and Wisdom correspond to the three theological virtues and to the personification of wisdom, which has led many historians to regard the legend as an allegory that acquired a martyrological form. It is possible that otherwise unknown martyrs were later given these symbolic names, but no evidence allows Hope to be identified as a historical individual with a known year of birth or death. What can be said with confidence is that by late antiquity a cult of these figures existed in both East and West, and that Saint Hope has been honored for centuries as a child martyr of Rome within that traditional framework.
