Biography

Short Description

Saint Hospitius, known in French as Saint Hospice and sometimes Latinized as Hospitus or Sospis, was a Christian recluse of the sixth century in the coastal territory of Nice in southeastern Gaul. Almost everything that can be said of him with confidence derives from Gregory of Tours, who devoted a chapter of Book VI of the History of the Franks to the hermit and treated him as a recent figure of holy memory. Gregory locates Hospitius in a tower within the Nicene territory, on the Mediterranean shore. Later medieval and early modern hagiography often asserts that Hospitius had been a monk in Egypt before emigrating to Provence, thereby placing him in the lineage of the desert fathers; that detail is absent from Gregory and remains unverified. The tower itself stood on the peninsula today called Cap Ferrat, east of Nice, a site that still carries the name Saint-Hospice.

The manner of life Gregory describes is one of extreme enclosure and bodily mortification. Hospitius bound himself with an iron chain which he did not remove, so that the metal bit into his flesh and left him ulcerated. He restricted his food to small quantities of bread and dates. Such asceticism, though startling, was intelligible in a world that still looked to Egyptian and Syrian models of holiness and that valued the recluse as a living intercessor on the margins of the city. People came to the tower for prayer, prophecy, and healing. Hospitius was believed to know distant events and future calamities. In particular he announced that Lombard war-bands would invade Gaul, a warning that corresponded to the raids of the mid-570s, when Lombard dukes including Amo, Zaban, and Rodanus pushed into Provence and the Rhône valley.

Gregory recounts that when Lombard fighters reached the tower they took the chained hermit for a condemned criminal. One of them prepared to cut him down; the assailant's arm became rigid and useless. Hospitius signed the man with the cross, restored the limb, and so moved him that the warrior abandoned his Arian or pagan attachments and accepted the Catholic faith. Other Lombards, struck by the miracle and by the recluse's words, likewise spared him and those who sought refuge at the tower. The episode, as Gregory shapes it, displays both the vulnerability of Provence in the decades after Justinian's wars and the role of the holy man as a protector of local populations. Hospitius is also said to have foretold the time of his own death and to have given last instructions to those who attended him.

He died in 581. The date 21 May, recorded in the Roman Martyrology, became his feast. Burial took place at the hermitage. In subsequent centuries a chapel, the Chapelle Saint-Hospice, rose on Cap Ferrat, and relics associated with the saint, including the iron chain, were kept and shown in churches of the region around Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer. There was no papal process of canonization; veneration grew from local memory and from Gregory's narrative, in the manner later classified as pre-congregation. Hospitius never acquired a wide portfolio of official patronages, but his name remained attached to the landscape of Cap Ferrat and to the diocesan calendar of Nice. For the historian he is one of the few Provençal recluses of the Merovingian period who can be anchored in a near-contemporary source rather than in purely legendary vitae, even though many later embroideries cannot be confirmed.
