Biography

Short Description

Blessed Hroznata of Ovenec (Czech: Hroznata z Ovence; also known as Hroznata of Teplá) was a Bohemian nobleman of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, founder of two Premonstratensian houses in western Bohemia and later a brother of the community he had endowed. He belonged to a landed family whose name is taken from Ovenec, a settlement near Prague in the Kingdom of Bohemia. As a secular magnate he married and, according to the thirteenth-century Vita fratris Hroznatae composed at Teplá, had at least one son. Both his wife and his child died, a bereavement that the vita presents as the turning point of his life and the occasion for a more explicitly religious use of his wealth and rank.

In the 1190s Hroznata bound himself by a crusading vow. Instead of departing for the Holy Land he obtained from the papacy—traditionally associated with Pope Celestine III—a commutation of that vow into the foundation of a monastery. In 1193 he established Teplá Abbey in western Bohemia for canons of the Order of Prémontré, endowing it with extensive estates drawn from his own patrimony. In the first years of the thirteenth century he founded a second house, the Premonstratensian nunnery of Chotěšov, with which his sister Vojslava was closely connected. He remained the principal lay protector of both communities, defending their property against neighboring lords and kinsmen who contested the alienations, and he secured confirmations of their rights from the Bohemian ruler Přemysl Otakar I.

Later in life Hroznata himself took the Premonstratensian habit at Teplá and lived as a brother of the house he had founded. In 1217, while seeking to recover or defend monastic lands, he was seized by hostile knights. He refused to authorize a ransom paid from the abbey’s goods. Left without food in a dungeon, he died of starvation on 14 July 1217. His body was recovered and buried at Teplá Abbey. A local cult grew around his tomb; the Premonstratensians kept his memory, and a Latin vita was written in the mid-thirteenth century.

The cult received formal papal recognition when Pope Leo XIII confirmed Hroznata’s beatification (an equipollent recognition of the existing cult) in 1897. His feast is observed on 14 July, especially in Premonstratensian houses and in the Czech lands. He is remembered as a noble founder who entered the order he had endowed and who chose death rather than impoverish that community. Teplá Abbey, despite later suppressions and restorations, remains the principal site associated with his life and burial.
