Biography

Short Description

Hryhoriy Lakota was born on 31 January 1883 in the village of Holodivka in eastern Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now in western Ukraine. He was raised in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the Byzantine-rite church in union with Rome since the Union of Brest. After secondary schooling he studied theology in Lviv and at the University of Vienna, where he obtained a doctorate in theology. He was ordained a priest in 1908. He then taught at the Greek Catholic theological seminary in Przemyśl (Peremyshl) and later served as its rector, forming clergy in a borderland eparchy where Ukrainian, Polish, and imperial loyalties were in constant tension, especially after Galicia passed into the Second Polish Republic following the First World War.

In 1926 he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Przemyśl and received episcopal consecration that year, assisting Bishop Josaphat Kotsylovsky. His ministry covered the interwar decades, the Soviet occupation of 1939–1941, the German occupation, and the return of Soviet power in 1944. After the war the Soviet authorities set out to liquidate the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, pressuring clergy to enter the Russian Orthodox Church and arresting those who refused. Lakota, a diocesan bishop rather than a member of a religious order, remained with his church in communion with Rome.

He was arrested by Soviet authorities in 1946, tried, and sentenced to ten years in the Gulag. He was deported to the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in the far north of European Russia and held at the Abez camp complex in the Pechora basin, where prisoners faced Arctic cold, hunger, and forced labor. Inmates later recalled his patience, prayer, and willingness to comfort others across national and confessional lines.

Lakota died in the camp at Abez on 12 November 1950. He was among the Greek Catholic bishops and clergy who perished in Soviet prisons and labor camps rather than accept the forced suppression of their church. On 27 June 2001, during an apostolic visit to Ukraine, Pope John Paul II beatified him together with a group of other Ukrainian Greek Catholic martyrs of the twentieth century. He is venerated as Blessed Hryhoriy Lakota; he has not been canonized.
