Biography

Hryhoriy Khomyshyn was born on 25 March 1867 in the village of Hadynkivtsi in Galicia, then part of the Austrian Empire and today in western Ukraine. He was formed in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the Byzantine-rite church in communion with Rome that was the majority church of Galician Ukrainians. After theological studies, including work in Vienna, he was ordained a priest in 1893. He served in pastoral ministry and in seminary education and, in the early twentieth century, was rector of the Greek Catholic Theological Seminary in Lviv.

In 1904 he was appointed Bishop of Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk) and was consecrated by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. He governed that eparchy for more than four decades, spanning Austrian, Polish, Soviet, and German rule. As bishop he founded a theological seminary in Stanislaviv, emphasized catechesis and clerical discipline, and took a generally conservative line in liturgical and theological questions. He was a well-known public figure in Galicia, identified with defense of the union with Rome and with opposition both to atheistic communism and to some radical political currents of the period.

After the Soviet occupation of western Ukraine he was arrested by the NKVD. He had already been detained during the first Soviet occupation of 1939–1941. In 1945 he was imprisoned in Kyiv. He refused demands that he break communion with the Holy See and accept the Russian Orthodox Church. He died in Lukyanivska Prison in Kyiv on 17 December 1945 as a result of imprisonment.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 27 June 2001 in Lviv, together with other bishops, clergy, religious, and laity of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church who died under Soviet persecution. He is venerated as a martyr. His recognition belongs to the wider memory of that church, which the Soviet authorities attempted to liquidate in 1946.
