Biography

Short Description

Saint Hubert, known in Latin as Hubertus, was a Frankish bishop active in the Meuse region in the late seventh and early eighth centuries. He succeeded Saint Lambert as bishop of Maastricht and transferred the seat of the diocese to Liège, becoming the first bishop of that city. Almost all that is known of him depends on a Life written about 743, only some sixteen years after his death, together with later liturgical and narrative elaborations. The early Life already treats him as a saintly bishop and organizer of the church in a frontier zone of the Frankish world; it does not, however, supply a precise year of birth or a securely documented parentage. Later medieval writers placed his birth at Toulouse in the mid-seventh century and made him a son of Bertrand, Duke of Aquitaine. That Aquitanian ducal genealogy is not corroborated by contemporary evidence and is generally regarded as legendary.

According to the eighth-century account, Hubert was a nobleman who served at the Austrasian court, in the milieu of Pepin of Herstal. He was married; after the death of his wife he turned to a religious life under the influence of Bishop Lambert of Maastricht. Subsequent tradition named the wife Floribanne (or Floribana), described her as a daughter of Dagobert, Count of Leuven, and stated that she died in childbirth. The same tradition identifies their son as Floribert, who later became bishop of Liège. Floribert’s succession is historically attested; the details of the marriage belong to hagiographic narrative rather than to independent documentary proof. The famous story that Hubert, while hunting on Good Friday, saw a crucifix between the antlers of a stag and was thereby converted from a passionate huntsman’s life, does not appear in the early Life. It was attached to him in the later Middle Ages, almost certainly by transfer from the legend of Saint Eustace, and thereafter dominated his iconography.

After Lambert’s murder at Liège around the first years of the eighth century, Hubert was elected to succeed him. He moved the episcopal residence from Maastricht to Liège, where Lambert had been killed and buried, and he promoted Lambert’s cult as a martyr. As bishop he is described as travelling through the Ardennes and the sandy region of Toxandria (the Campine), preaching, founding or reconsecrating churches, and bringing scattered rural populations more firmly within diocesan structures. The area was still only partly Christianized, and his work belongs to the broader consolidation of the church in the northeastern Frankish lands under the early Pippinids. He left no substantial body of writings; his reputation in the earliest sources is that of a pastor and missionary bishop rather than of a scholar or monastic founder. He was not a member of a religious order in the later canonical sense.

Hubert died on 30 May 727 at Fura, which is identified with Tervuren in Brabant, during a journey connected with his pastoral office. He was buried in the collegiate church of Saint Peter at Liège. In 825 Bishop Walcaud of Liège translated the relics to the monastery of Andage in the Ardennes forest. The abbey and the town that grew around it took the name Saint-Hubert and became the chief shrine of the saint, attracting pilgrims especially from hunting and rural communities. A further elevation of the relics and the development of a second, more legendary Life in the later medieval period fixed the image of Hubert as the gentleman-hunter turned bishop.

His principal feast is celebrated on 3 November, the date associated with the translation of his relics; the anniversary of his death, 30 May, has also been kept in some calendars. Because he lived long before the centralized papal canonization process of the later Middle Ages, he was not canonized by a named pope in the modern sense; his cult is pre-congregation, rooted in local veneration at Liège and Saint-Hubert and subsequently accepted throughout the Latin Church and in some Eastern and Anglican calendars. He is widely invoked as patron of hunters, huntsmen, and hunting, as well as of dogs, foresters, trappers, archers, and related crafts, and he has been called upon against rabies and dog bites, notably through the so-called Key of Saint Hubert. Other patronages attached to him include mathematicians, opticians, metalworkers, smelters, and precision instrument makers, together with the city of Liège and the town of Saint-Hubert in Belgium.
