Biography

Short Description

Hugh of Noara, also known as Hugh of Novara and in Italian as Sant'Ugo di Novara di Sicilia, was a twelfth-century French Cistercian monk and abbot venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. He is remembered above all as a disciple and companion of Bernard of Clairvaux and as the monk who planted Cistercian life in northeastern Sicily. Historical documentation for his career is sparse, as is typical of many regional monastic figures of the high Middle Ages; the outline that survives comes from later liturgical tradition, local Sicilian memory, and the association of his name with the abbey of Santa Maria di Novara (also called Santa Maria dell'Alto) near Novara di Sicilia in the province of Messina.

Hugh was born in France at an unknown date in the earlier twelfth century. He entered the Cistercian Order and was formed in the reforming observance that had spread from Cîteaux and Clairvaux: strict interpretation of the Rule of Saint Benedict, liturgical prayer, manual labor, and withdrawal from worldly entanglement. Hagiographical tradition presents him as a companion of Saint Bernard. In the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, King Roger II and his circle were then consolidating Latin ecclesiastical institutions on an island whose religious landscape still included Greek monasticism and the aftermath of Islamic rule. Bernard was asked to send monks; Hugh was among those who went. The mission belongs to the broader twelfth-century expansion of the Cistercians into southern Italy and Sicily.

In Sicily Hugh became the first abbot of the Cistercian house of Santa Maria di Novara, in the mountains above Novara di Sicilia. As abbot he was responsible for establishing Cistercian custom in a remote frontier monastery: the horarium, the choir office, the discipline of silence and work, and the economic pattern of granges and self-supporting agriculture that characterized the order. The foundation tied a small Sicilian community to the international Cistercian network centered on Clairvaux. Hugh remained at the house for the rest of his life and died there. The year most commonly given in the tradition is 1173; his death is commemorated on 17 August, which became his feast day.

He was buried at his abbey. A local cult grew around his tomb, and he came to be honored as the patron saint of Novara di Sicilia. No papal act of formal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense is securely attached to his name; like many twelfth-century monastic saints, he was recognized by popular and diocesan cult. The limits of the evidence should be stated plainly: precise birth year, family, and the exact chronology of his departure from France are not recoverable from surviving sources. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a French Cistercian linked to Bernard’s circle became first abbot of Santa Maria di Novara, died in Sicily in the later twelfth century, and has been venerated locally ever since, especially on 17 August in Novara di Sicilia.
