Biography

Hugolino Magalotti, also known in Italian sources as Ugolino Magalotti, was a fourteenth-century hermit of the Third Order of Saint Francis, later venerated as Blessed. He was born in Camerino, in the Marche of central Italy, into the noble Magalotti family. No reliable historical source records the year of his birth, and later notices that assign a precise date are not grounded in contemporary evidence. The surviving hagiographical tradition, which is late and relatively sparse, agrees that after the death of his parents he distributed his inherited property to the poor and embraced a life of evangelical poverty rather than remaining in the world as a landed noble.

He then entered the Third Order of Saint Francis and withdrew to a hermitage in the countryside near Camerino. There he lived in austerity, prayer, and penance, following the penitential rule of the Franciscan tertiaries rather than the cloistered life of the First Order. Accounts of his eremitical years describe him as sought out by the sick and by people in need of spiritual counsel. He acquired a local reputation for holiness and for miracles of healing, though the miracle stories themselves are known only from later cultic tradition and cannot be independently verified from fourteenth-century documents.

According to the date preserved in Franciscan calendars and in the later confirmation of his cult, Hugolino died on 11 December 1373, near or at Camerino. A popular devotion formed around his memory in the Marche. In the nineteenth century the Holy See examined this longstanding local veneration. Pope Pius IX confirmed the cult of Hugolino Magalotti in 1856, which in the practice of that period equivalent to beatification for a figure of immemorial cult. He is commemorated on 11 December, particularly in Franciscan martyrologies and in the region of Camerino.

Outside specialist Franciscan hagiography and local Umbrian-Marchigian devotion he remains an obscure figure. The outline that can be stated with caution is consistent across the principal modern compilations: noble birth at Camerino, radical disposal of property after his parents’ death, a lay eremitical vocation within the Franciscan Third Order, death in 1373, and papal confirmation of cult in the mid-nineteenth century. No contemporary vita of independent historical value is known, and details beyond this outline should be treated as traditional rather than as documented biography.
