Biography

Short Description

Saint Hyacinth, known in Polish as Jacek Odrowąż, was a thirteenth-century Dominican friar and missionary, often called the Apostle of the North. He was born into the noble Odrowąż family in Silesia, traditionally at Kamień Śląski, in the later twelfth century; an exact year of birth is not securely documented. After studies associated with Kraków and other schools, he became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Kraków. In the early 1220s he went to Rome with his uncle Ivo Odrowąż, bishop of Kraków. There he met Saint Dominic and, together with his kinsman Ceslaus (Czesław Odrowąż), received the Dominican habit from the founder of the Order of Preachers.

Returning to Poland, Hyacinth established the first Dominican convent in the kingdom at Kraków around 1222, at the church of the Holy Trinity. From that house he and his brethren founded further priories and preached in the Polish lands, Pomerania, Prussia, and the territories of Kievan Rus'. Later medieval lives credit him with far-ranging journeys into Lithuania, Scandinavia, and still more distant regions. Modern historians treat many of those itineraries as hagiographical expansion, while accepting a substantial missionary career on the northern and eastern frontiers of Latin Christendom. He is especially linked with a miracle at Kiev: during a Tatar assault he is said to have carried the Blessed Sacrament and a heavy statue of the Virgin Mary from a burning church and to have crossed the Dnieper in safety.

Hyacinth spent his last years at the Kraków convent. He died there on 15 August 1257, the feast of the Assumption, after celebrating Mass. His tomb in the Dominican church of the Holy Trinity became a focus of local veneration, and the cult spread in Poland and throughout the Dominican Order. Pope Clement VIII canonized him on 17 April 1594. His feast is kept on 17 August (it had been observed on 16 August before the calendar reform of 1969).

Devotion to him has remained especially strong in Poland, where churches, Dominican houses, and the sanctuary at his traditional birthplace of Kamień Śląski preserve his memory. He is invoked as a patron of Poland and Lithuania, of Kraków, and of those in danger of drowning. Iconography typically shows him in the Dominican habit holding a monstrance and a statue of the Madonna, recalling the Kiev miracle. Although the earliest contemporary documentation of his life is limited and later vitae mix history with legend, his role in implanting the Dominican Order in Poland and in preaching on the eastern borders of Latin Christendom in the thirteenth century is firmly established.
