Biography

Short Description

Hypatius of Gangra was a Christian bishop of Gangra, the principal city of the Roman province of Paphlagonia in northern Asia Minor, on the site of present-day Çankırı in Turkey. Almost nothing can be established about his family, education, or early life; no surviving source records his year or place of birth, and he should not be confused with other saints of the same name, such as Hypatius of Bithynia, a later abbot. He enters the historical record as one of the bishops who took part in the First Council of Nicaea, convened by the Emperor Constantine in 325 to address the teaching of Arius and questions of church order, including the date of Easter. His name appears in the lists of Nicene signatories as bishop of Gangra, and that attendance is the principal fact of his career that rests on conciliar documentation rather than later legend.

According to Greek and Latin hagiographical tradition, Hypatius was attacked by Novatianists while returning from Nicaea to his see. The Novatian community, which originated in the mid-third century around the Roman priest Novatian, refused to restore to communion Christians who had lapsed under persecution, and regarded the wider church as too lenient. The Council of Nicaea had issued canons on the reception of Novatianist clergy, notably Canon 8, and later writers presented the assault as a reaction to that settlement. The conventional passion narrative states that a woman among the attackers struck him on the head with a stone and killed him. A related miracle story, typical of martyr cults, claimed that the same woman was then possessed by a demon and was healed only after she sought help at his tomb. These episodes belong to the synaxarion tradition and are not narrated by the major fourth- and fifth-century church historians.

The year of his death is customarily given as 326, shortly after the close of the Nicene council, but that date is conventional rather than independently confirmed by a contemporary chronicle. He was buried at Gangra, where a local cult formed around his relics. In the Eastern Orthodox Church he is venerated as a hieromartyr and wonderworker, with his chief feast on 31 March. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 14 November as a bishop slain by the Novatians on his return from Nicaea. No letters, sermons, or other writings by him are known to survive, and there is no reliable evidence as to whether he was married or had children. He held neither the see of Rome nor a patriarchal throne.

The church of Gangra remained regionally important after his death. A council held there in the mid-fourth century issued canons against the extreme ascetic followers of Eustathius of Sebaste, who were accused of condemning marriage and ordinary ecclesiastical life; that synod is not linked by name to Hypatius in the surviving acts. Churches in Paphlagonia were dedicated to him, and his relics continued to be associated with Gangra. Because the documentary base is so thin, a cautious account must separate the historically attested Nicene bishop from the fuller portrait drawn by medieval liturgical texts. His cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type; no later formal canonization or beatification by a named pope is recorded.
