Biography

Short Description

Saint Ia of Cornwall (also recorded as Eia, Hia, Ives, or Hya) is a female saint of early medieval Celtic Christianity, traditionally placed in the fifth or sixth century. Later legend describes her as an Irishwoman of high birth, sometimes a princess, and links her with the family of Saint Erc of Slane and with Irish missionaries who, in the same legendary cycle, included Saints Fingar (Gwinear) and Piala. Those kinship and companionship claims rest on medieval hagiography, not on any surviving contemporary source. What can be said with greater confidence is that a saint named Ia was venerated from an early date in west Cornwall, that the seaport now called St Ives takes its Cornish name Porth Ia (Ia's cove or harbour) from her, and that the parish church of the town is dedicated to her.

The best-known story of her journey holds that she meant to cross from Ireland with other saints but reached the shore after their ships had gone. After prayer, a small leaf (or, in variant tellings, a piece of wood, a sod of earth, or a millstone) floated toward her; it grew large enough to carry her, and she arrived in Cornwall before her companions. She is said to have landed at Pendinas, the promontory known today as The Island or St Ives Head, on St Ives Bay. The leaf-crossing is a migratory folklore motif attached to several Irish and British saints and is not historical evidence, but it became the characteristic emblem of her legend and of later local devotion.

In Cornwall she is credited with establishing an oratory on or near the site of the later church of St Ia at St Ives. Medieval tradition, drawing on the Life of Saint Gwinear, adds that she was martyred by a local ruler named Tewdwr (Theodore) near the River Hayle, the same figure blamed for killing Gwinear and other Irish arrivals. Other strands of her cult present her simply as a virgin foundress who died a natural death. No contemporary account of her passion or burial exists. Her shrine in the church at St Ives was honoured in the later Middle Ages, and the existing parish church, rebuilt on a grand scale in the fifteenth century, occupies the traditional site of her foundation. A possible Breton counterpart of her cult has been seen in the parish name Plouyé in Finistère.

Historically, Ia remains an obscure figure. She left no writings, and the narrative details of her life are late and legendary. Modern scholarship on the saints of Cornwall treats the Irish origin, the miraculous voyage, and the martyrdom as unverified tradition, while accepting the antiquity of her dedication at St Ives and her place in the local calendar. She is not to be confused with Saint Ivo of Huntingdonshire or with Saint Yves of Brittany (Yves Hélory). Her feast is kept on 3 February. She is honoured as a virgin, and in many listings as a martyr, and she is the patron saint of St Ives in Cornwall.
