Biography

Short Description

Iarlaithe mac Loga, known in English as Saint Jarlath (also Iarlath or Iarlaith), was an early medieval Irish churchman of Connacht, remembered as the founder of the monastery of Tuam and, in later diocesan tradition, as first bishop of that see. He belonged to the Conmaicne, the people of Mag Seóla in what is now County Galway. Medieval genealogies name his father as Loga (Lugh) and his mother as Mongfinn, daughter of Ciardubán of the Ciarraige. No contemporary record of his birth survives. Later tradition, seeking to place him in the generation after Saint Patrick, sometimes assigns a fifth-century birth, but that figure is not independently verified and should not be treated as a historical date. He is best described as a figure of the sixth century whose life is known only through genealogies, martyrologies, annalistic notices, and later hagiography.

According to those later accounts, Jarlath was educated at Kilbannon (Cill Bheanáin) under Benignus (Benen), a disciple of Patrick. He then established a monastic school at Cloonfush (Cluain Fois), a short distance west of the later site of Tuam. Cloonfush is described as a place of scripture and Latin learning in the Irish monastic manner. Hagiographical tradition names Brendan of Clonfert and Colmán of Cloyne among his pupils; those associations cannot be confirmed from contemporary sources but reflect the reputation the school later enjoyed. Irish monasteries of this type combined ascetic community life with the training of clergy, and Jarlath is consistently presented as a monastic founder rather than a secular or married cleric.

A well-known legend explains the transfer from Cloonfush to Tuam. Jarlath was advised—by an aged holy man, or in some versions by Brendan—to travel eastward in his chariot until a wheel broke, and there to found his church. The wheel is said to have broken at Tuaim dá Gualann (“the mound of the two shoulders”), where he established the monastery that became the nucleus of the later town and diocese of Tuam. He is regarded in local and diocesan tradition as Tuam’s first bishop, although a formally organised diocese in the later medieval sense belongs to a subsequent period. Annalistic compilations, notably the Annals of Tigernach, record the death of Iarlaithe of Tuam under the year 540, which has become the conventional date. Some older notices mention 481 or give 26 December as the day of death; those variants underline how uncertain the precise chronology remains. He is believed to have been buried at his monastery in Tuam.

Jarlath’s cult was centred on Tuam, which in the twelfth century became an archiepiscopal see for Connacht. He is the principal patron of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuam and of the town itself. His feast is kept on 6 June. No writings by him survive, and there was no papal canonization of the later medieval type; his status as a saint rests on ancient local veneration and inclusion in Irish martyrologies. The details of his biography therefore remain those of a poorly documented early Irish monastic founder, around whom a durable diocesan and civic cult later formed.
