Biography

Short Description

Saint Ida of Herzfeld was a Frankish noblewoman of the Carolingian period who lived in the late eighth and early ninth centuries. Surviving information about her depends largely on later hagiography, especially the Vita sanctae Idae composed around 980 by Uffing, a monk of the abbey of Werden, together with liturgical commemoration and the continuity of her cult at Herzfeld in Westphalia. Tradition describes her as being of high Frankish birth and as related to the family of Charlemagne, although contemporary charters do not fix her parentage with certainty. She was given in marriage to Count Egbert (Ekbert), a magnate associated with Charlemagne’s government of Saxony, who held estates in the Dreingau, including Herzfeld. The marriage produced children; among them, Warin became abbot of Corvey, and Cobbo the Elder is named among the Saxon aristocracy of the next generation.

In widowhood, after Egbert’s death in the early ninth century, Ida made Herzfeld her residence and the scene of her religious and charitable activity. She founded and endowed a church there, which became her burial place and the later parish church that bears her name. Carolingian and Ottonian memory and the tenth-century Life present her as a model of the pious widow: she is said to have lived in prayer and austerity while using her resources to feed and clothe the poor. A characteristic legend recounts that she had a stone sarcophagus made while she still lived and that she filled it with provisions which were then distributed as alms; this object, remembered as the Idastein, was long shown at Herzfeld. Whatever the exact historical kernel of such stories, they reflect a reputation for mercy that attached to her memory from an early date.

Ida died at Herzfeld on 4 September 825 and was interred in her church. In 980 her relics were elevated, an act that both expressed and promoted her cult and that prompted Uffing’s biography. Herzfeld, in what is today the district of Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia, remained the center of her veneration through the Middle Ages. Pilgrims, including expectant mothers, have continued to visit her shrine. Her feast day is 4 September. She is regarded as patron of Herzfeld and of pregnant women. She was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the kind later required by the Holy See; like other early medieval saints, she was honored on the basis of long-standing public cult and local ecclesiastical approval.

Historically, Ida belongs to the class of Carolingian aristocratic women whose piety was expressed through widowhood, church foundation, and almsgiving rather than through entrance into a cloistered order. She held no papal or patriarchal office and is not securely documented as a nun or abbess of a regular community, even though her foundation at Herzfeld later took on the character of a parish and pilgrimage church. The limits of the evidence should be acknowledged: much of the narrative color in her Life is tenth-century hagiography, written a century and a half after her death, and modern historians treat genealogical claims and miracle stories with caution while accepting the core facts of her marriage, her residence and church at Herzfeld, her children, and her early medieval cult.
