Biography

Short Description

Idus of Leinster, also recorded as Id, Iod, Idh, or Idus of Ath-Fadha, was an early Irish Christian bishop of the fifth century, associated with the province of Leinster. Almost everything that can be said of him rests on brief later notices rather than on a contemporary Life. Irish tradition presents him as a disciple of Saint Patrick and as the bishop placed over a church at Áth Fadat (also written Ath-Fadha or Alt-Fadha), a site identified with Aghade in County Carlow, on or near the River Slaney. No reliable year of birth or death survives, and nothing authentic is known of his parentage, education, or the circumstances of his conversion.

In the fifth-century Irish church, episcopal office was typically tied to a particular church or people rather than to the later diocesan map. Idus’s title as bishop of Ath-Fadha therefore points to local pastoral charge at a Patrician foundation in Leinster, not to a see in the medieval sense. Later genealogical claims that would attach him to Leinster dynasties appear only in much later compilations and cannot be verified. No early source describes his rule of life in detail, records a spouse or children, or preserves writings or independently attested miracles under his name.

His cult is known from Irish martyrological tradition. Compilations such as the Martyrology of Donegal commemorate Idh or Id of Ath Fada on 14 July, the date generally assigned to his feast in later calendars and in collections such as Butler’s Lives of the Saints and John O’Hanlon’s Lives of the Irish Saints. He is not a prominent figure in the major early verse martyrologies, and he is absent from the widely circulated continental martyrologies of the early Middle Ages. No medieval vita devoted solely to him is known to survive. Seventeenth-century Irish hagiographers, including John Colgan, repeat the Patrician discipleship and the Carlow location but add little that can be traced to an early narrative source.

Because the record is so thin, Idus remains one of the more obscure saints linked to Patrick’s mission in Leinster. Local identification of the early church at Aghade with his name has persisted, but neither archaeology nor the surviving texts allow a detailed reconstruction of his career. He is honoured in Irish tradition as a bishop and confessor. He was never Bishop of Rome, nor patriarch of an Eastern see. Cult of this kind arose by local acclamation and liturgical commemoration long before the later papal processes of beatification and canonization, and no individual canonizing authority is recorded for him.
