Biography

Short Description

Ignace de Vologda, known in Russian as Ignaty Vologodsky and in secular life as Prince Ioann (Ivan) Andreyevich of Uglich, was a Rurikid prince of the Grand Duchy of Moscow who became an Orthodox monk and is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He belonged to the Uglich cadet line: his father was Prince Andrei Vasilyevich, called Andrei the Elder (Andrei Bolshoy), a younger brother of Grand Prince Ivan III of Moscow. In the succession struggles that accompanied Muscovite centralization, Ivan III moved against this brother in 1491, confiscating the Uglich appanage and imprisoning Andrei, who died in confinement in 1493. Andrei’s sons Ioann and Dmitry were likewise detained and were never restored to independent princely rule. Their later lives were spent under guard in the Russian North and are associated in church tradition with Vologda.

In captivity Ioann received the monastic tonsure and the name Ignatius. The place of his profession and of his remaining years was the Saviour-Priluki Monastery (Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery) near Vologda, a fourteenth-century foundation of St. Dimitry Prilutsky and one of the chief houses of the Russian North. Hagiographic and liturgical accounts present him as a prince who did not seek restoration or revenge, but who accepted dispossession as ascesis and lived in obedience, poverty, and prayer. He is classed among the prepodobnye (venerable monastic saints), not among bishops or missionaries. No reliable source records a marriage or children; the surviving narrative of his adult life is entirely that of a detained prince who became a monk.

According to the received tradition of the Russian Church he died on 19 May 1522 and was buried at the Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery. Local veneration at Vologda and in connection with the memory of the Uglich princes led to his inclusion in Orthodox menologia. His principal feast is 19 May in the Julian calendar (1 June in the Gregorian calendar). He is sometimes remembered with other saints of the Vologda land. He held no patriarchal or papal office, and there is no well-documented Western-style bull of canonization; his cult is that of a locally glorified monk-prince later received into the wider calendar.

The historian must separate chronicle fact from later pious narrative. Independent Muscovite sources confirm the fall of the Uglich house and the lifelong detention of Andrei’s sons; they do not give a birth year for Ioann, a detailed monastic curriculum, or contemporary miracle collections. The monastic name Ignatius, the association with Priluki, the burial at that monastery, and the traditional year of death come from ecclesiastical memory, service texts, and later synaxaria. A precise year of birth, extended childhood episodes, writings, and a list of patronages are not securely established in early non-liturgical evidence. Ignace de Vologda remains a relatively obscure but authentic figure of late medieval Russian sanctity: a dispossessed prince whose public story is short and whose religious identity is that of a monk of Vologda.
