Biography

Short Description

Saint Ignatius Bryanchaninov was born Dmitry Alexandrovich Bryanchaninov in 1807 at the family estate of Pokrovskoye in the Vologda Governorate of the Russian Empire. He came from an old noble family, and his father intended him for a distinguished secular career in imperial service. From childhood he showed a strong attraction to prayer, fasting, and the writings of the Church Fathers, which already set him apart from the ordinary expectations of his class. He was sent to Saint Petersburg to study at the Main Engineering School, where he proved an outstanding pupil and came to the notice of Emperor Nicholas I. Despite the prospect of rapid advancement as a military engineer, he regarded worldly success as a spiritual danger and remained inwardly committed to the monastic vocation.

After a period of serious illness that interrupted his military duties, he obtained a discharge and entered monastic life, overcoming determined opposition from his family. He lived in several monasteries, seeking experienced elders and immersing himself in the ascetic tradition of the Eastern Church. In 1831 he received the monastic tonsure with the name Ignatius and was ordained to the priesthood. He was soon appointed superior of the Saint Sergius Hermitage near Saint Petersburg, a house that had fallen into disorder. Over more than two decades he restored its liturgical and monastic life, guided numerous monks and lay visitors, and formed the spiritual teaching later set down in his books. His direction emphasized watchfulness of mind, the Jesus Prayer, and a sober distrust of visions and emotional enthusiasm, which he identified with the patristic warning against prelest, or spiritual delusion.

In 1857 Ignatius was consecrated Bishop of the Caucasus and the Black Sea, with his cathedral in Stavropol. The diocese covered a recently pacified and ethnically mixed frontier; he labored to organize parishes, raise the educational level of the clergy, and preach under difficult conditions of climate and distance. The strain damaged his already fragile health, and in 1861 he was permitted to retire. He settled at the Nikolo-Babaevsky Monastery on the Volga in Kostroma Governorate, where he devoted his last years to writing, correspondence, and the care of those who sought his counsel. There he completed the principal works by which he is known, including the Ascetical Experiences and treatises on monastic life and inner prayer, together with a large body of letters. He died at the monastery in 1867 and was buried there.

His writings became widely read in Russia and later in translation among Orthodox Christians elsewhere. They offer a systematic, psychologically penetrating account of repentance, unceasing prayer, and struggle against the passions, grounded in the Philokalia and in the Russian monastic revival of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He is often grouped with the Optina elders and Saint Theophan the Recluse as a leading spiritual author of his century. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint in 1988 at the Local Council held for the millennium of the Baptism of Rus. He is commemorated on 30 April. His relics remain at the Nikolo-Babaevsky Monastery, which has been revived in modern times as a place of pilgrimage.
