Biography

Short Description

Ignatius Capizzi (Italian: Ignazio Capizzi) was an eighteenth-century Roman Catholic diocesan priest from Sicily, remembered for preaching, works of charity, and a contemporary reputation for holiness. He was born on 24 September 1708 in Bronte, in the interior of eastern Sicily, then part of the Kingdom of Sicily. Surviving accounts describe a modest, devout family background and an early attraction to the priesthood, together with particular devotion to the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary. After local schooling he pursued ecclesiastical studies and was ordained a priest of the Latin rite; he subsequently settled in Palermo, the island’s capital, which remained the centre of his ministry until his death.

In Palermo, Capizzi became known as a popular preacher whose sermons on repentance, frequent reception of the sacraments, and practical charity drew hearers from many social ranks. He devoted himself especially to the poor, to catechesis of children, and to the care of girls and young women who lacked protection or education. He founded or strongly supported conservatories and similar houses that combined religious formation, basic schooling, and vocational training, as well as assistance for orphans and the destitute. He also visited prisoners and the sick. These activities took place against the background of marked social inequality and limited public provision for the vulnerable in Bourbon Sicily.

Contemporaries attributed to him an austere personal life of prayer and penance alongside his public work, and they credited him with charismatic gifts such as knowledge of consciences, prophecy, and healings obtained through his intercession while he was still alive. Hagiographical tradition presents him as remaining humble and directing attention away from himself toward God. He died in Palermo on 27 September 1783.

A popular cult arose quickly after his death. The cause for beatification was later introduced in Rome, and Pope Pius IX declared the heroic character of his virtues, conferring the title Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized. Local veneration has continued in Sicily, particularly in Bronte and Palermo, where he is recalled as a model of priestly zeal and charity in the eighteenth century. Precise details of his burial site and of any later translation of relics are not securely established in the sources consulted here.
