Biography

Short Description

Ignatius Maloyan was born Shoukrallah Maloyan on 8 April 1869 in Mardin, in the Ottoman Empire. Mardin, in southeastern Anatolia, was then a religiously mixed city with a notable Armenian Catholic population alongside other Christian communities and Muslims. He was raised in the Armenian Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic church in communion with Rome that follows the Armenian liturgical tradition. In 1883, while still an adolescent, he entered the monastery-seminary of Our Lady of Bzommar in Lebanon, the principal house of formation for the patriarchal clergy of the Armenian Catholic Church. He took the name Ignatius and completed his studies there. He was ordained a priest in 1896.

In the years after ordination he was sent to serve Armenian Catholic communities outside his native region. He worked in Alexandria, Egypt, and later in Constantinople, carrying out parish duties and other ecclesiastical tasks among the diaspora. Those assignments gave him pastoral experience in urban settings far from Mardin. In 1911 Pope Pius X appointed him Archbishop of Mardin, and he returned to the city of his birth to take up the archeparchy. As archbishop he was responsible for Armenian Catholics in Mardin and its dependent territory. Accounts of his episcopate describe a pastor who visited villages, preached, and sought to sustain Christian life in a period when the situation of Ottoman Armenians was becoming increasingly precarious.

The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 was followed in 1915 by the Ottoman government’s campaign of mass arrest, deportation, and killing of Armenians, known as the Armenian Genocide. Clergy and community leaders were among the first targeted in many localities. In Mardin, Armenian Catholics, as well as Armenian Apostolic, Syriac, and Chaldean Christians, were swept up in the violence directed from the provincial authorities in Diyarbekir and local officials. Archbishop Maloyan was arrested in 1915 and imprisoned. He was accused of subversion, in line with the political charges commonly fabricated against Armenian notables. During interrogation he was pressed to convert to Islam and to lead his flock to do likewise. He refused to abandon his Christian faith.

On 11 June 1915 he was removed from prison with other detainees and killed. He was forty-six years old. Witness statements gathered for the later ecclesiastical process describe his execution in the course of the convoy that left Mardin, after a further demand that he convert. His death occurred amid the broader destruction of the Christian communities of Mardin and the Diyarbekir region that summer. No verified tomb is known; like many victims of the massacres, he was not given a documented burial.

Pope John Paul II beatified Ignatius Maloyan as a martyr on 7 October 2001 in Rome. The Catholic Church keeps his memorial on 11 June, the date of his death. He is remembered as the Armenian Catholic archbishop of Mardin who remained with his people during the genocide and was put to death for refusing to renounce Christianity. His cult is observed especially in the Armenian Catholic Church and among those who commemorate the Christian victims of 1915.
