Biography
Ignazio Clemente Delgado, known in Spanish as Ignacio Clemente Delgado y Cebrián, was born on 23 November 1761 in Villafeliche, in the province of Zaragoza in Aragon, Spain. He entered the Order of Preachers and was formed for the missions of the Spanish Dominican Province of the Holy Rosary, which had charge of work in the Philippines and in East Asia. After ordination he was sent first to Manila and then, toward the end of the eighteenth century, to Tonkin in northern Vietnam, where Dominicans had labored since the seventeenth century among a Catholic population that lived under recurrent imperial suspicion and intermittent persecution.
In 1794 he was named titular bishop of Melipotamus and vicar apostolic of Eastern Tonkin; he received episcopal consecration in 1795. For more than four decades he governed a large and often clandestine flock, traveling when necessary in disguise, administering the sacraments, forming native clergy, and holding Christian communities together through stretches of relative calm and of severe repression. His long episcopate coincided with the consolidation of the Nguyễn dynasty and, from the 1820s, with the hardening anti-Christian policy of Emperor Minh Mạng, who treated the foreign religion as a political threat.
In 1838 the persecution reached the elderly bishop. He was arrested and confined at Nam Dinh in a narrow wooden cage exposed to sun and weather. Weakened by age, hunger, and illness, he died on 12 July 1838 before the sentence of beheading could be carried out. His body was thrown into a river to prevent Christians from recovering it for veneration. Other missionaries and Vietnamese faithful, including the Dominican bishop Dominic Henares, were put to death in the same wave of arrests.
Pope Leo XIII beatified Delgado on 27 May 1900 among a group of martyrs of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him as one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. The Church keeps their collective memorial on 24 November. He is venerated as a bishop-martyr of the Dominican Order and as one of the principal figures of the nineteenth-century Vietnamese martyrdoms.
