Biography

Short Description

Igor Akulov was born Ivan Mikhailovich Akulov in 1897 in the village of Savkino, in the Borovichi district of the Novgorod Governorate of the Russian Empire, into a peasant family. He received a clerical education at the Novgorod Theological Seminary in the last years of the imperial church-school system and during the collapse of the old regime. In 1918 he entered the Yuriev Monastery near Novgorod as a novice and was tonsured a monk with the name Igor. In the early 1920s he was ordained a hieromonk in the Russian Orthodox Church. His formation therefore combined seminary training, traditional Russian monastic tonsure, and priestly ordination at a moment when Orthodox institutions in northwestern Russia were already under severe pressure from the Bolshevik state.

In 1922 he was received into the Catholic Church while remaining a priest of the Byzantine rite, becoming a hieromonk of the small Russian Greek Catholic community. That community, centered in Petrograd, was associated with Exarch Leonid Feodorov and sought to live Russian liturgical and spiritual life in communion with Rome. Akulov’s ministry was exercised among this flock in Petrograd (renamed Leningrad in 1924) under police surveillance and official hostility. Soviet authorities treated Eastern-rite Catholicism as both a religious deviation and a political threat, and they moved against its clergy and active laity.

Akulov was arrested in 1923 in the repression that struck the Petrograd Catholics and sent Feodorov and others to prison and exile. After release he resumed such pastoral work as remained possible for a known Catholic priest. He was arrested again in the early 1930s as Stalinist anti-religious policy hardened and remaining clergy were treated as anti-Soviet elements. He stayed identified with the remnants of Russian Byzantine-rite Catholic life in Leningrad rather than emigrating or abandoning his priesthood.

In the summer of 1937, during the Great Purge, the NKVD arrested him once more. He was charged with counter-revolutionary activity, condemned by an extrajudicial troika, and shot in Leningrad on 27 August 1937. His burial place is not securely documented; like many executed in Leningrad that year, he was almost certainly placed in an unmarked mass grave. He was later rehabilitated under Soviet law. Historical and Catholic writing remember him as a priest-martyr of the Russian Greek Catholic Church in the twentieth century. Standard references do not record a completed papal beatification or canonization, nor an officially assigned patronage.
