Biography

Short Description

The figure known as Ilario di Matera is attested principally by the Italian form of his name, which associates him with Matera, the historic city in Basilicata in southern Italy. Matera’s Christian past is unusually rich: its Sassi districts contain dozens of rock-cut churches and monastic complexes whose occupation spans from late antiquity through the Middle Ages. Despite this dense religious landscape, no charter, chronicle, episcopal list, or liturgical calendar that can be dated and that names Ilario has been identified in the standard published sources for the region. As a result, even the century in which he lived cannot be established with confidence.

Southern Italian hagiography frequently commemorates local monks, hermits, and clerics whose reputations never spread beyond a single valley or town. Such figures sometimes appear only in later diocesan traditions or in the dedications of minor churches. Ilario may belong to this class of poorly documented holy men. The better-known Benedictine Giovanni da Matera (died 1139), founder of the Pulsano congregation, is recorded in Cistercian and papal documents; no comparable dossier exists for Ilario. It is therefore impossible to assign him to a religious order, to confirm whether he held episcopal or abbatial office, or to describe any miracles attributed to him.

No evidence has come to light that Ilario was married or had children, nor is there a record of a spouse. Likewise, there is no indication that he occupied the see of Rome or any patriarchal throne. Claims of canonization or beatification by a named pope or congregation cannot be verified. A feast day, a place of burial, and a list of patronages are equally unknown. Local devotion, if it existed, has left no trace in the major martyrologies or in the published acta of the diocese of Matera-Irsina.

In the present state of research, therefore, Ilario di Matera remains an obscure name attached to a well-known place. Any fuller biography would require the discovery of previously unpublished archival or liturgical material. Until such evidence appears, historical caution requires that dates of birth and death, precise offices, and details of cult be left unspecified.
