Biography

Short Description

Ingegerd Olofsdotter was a Swedish princess of the early eleventh century, the daughter of King Olof Skötkonung and Queen Estrid of the Obotrites. Olof, who ruled Sweden from about the 990s until the early 1020s, is generally regarded as the first king of Sweden to have been baptized and to have promoted Christianity in a still largely pagan land; he established an episcopal see at Skara and issued coinage with Christian symbols from Sigtuna. Estrid was a Slavic princess from the Obotrite confederation on the southern Baltic shore. Ingegerd's precise place of birth is not recorded in surviving sources; she is commonly said to have been born in 1001. She had a full brother, Anund Jacob, who succeeded their father, and half-siblings from Olof's union with the concubine Edla, notably Astrid and Emund the Old.

Political marriages were instruments of alliance in the Baltic world. Norse saga tradition, especially the saga of Olaf Haraldsson as preserved by Snorri Sturluson, relates that Ingegerd was betrothed to Olaf II of Norway in order to reconcile the Swedish and Norwegian kings after years of hostility. King Olof ultimately refused to honor the betrothal; Olaf of Norway was instead given Ingegerd's half-sister Astrid. In 1019 Ingegerd was married to Yaroslav Vladimirovich, son of Vladimir the Great. Yaroslav was then based at Novgorod and was fighting his brother Sviatopolk for control of Kiev, a struggle in which Scandinavian warriors played a major part. The marriage confirmed Swedish backing for Yaroslav. Saga tradition further states that Ingegerd received Ladoga as a wedding grant and that Ragnvald Ulfsson, a Swedish magnate related to her, became jarl of Ladoga. In the Orthodox milieu of Rus' she received the Christian name Irene (Irina), meaning peace.

Ingegerd spent her adult life as grand princess of Kiev during a period often described as a high point of Kievan Rus', when the state looked to Constantinople for liturgy, law, and architecture while remaining linked by trade and kinship to Scandinavia and the wider Baltic. Later tradition credits her with encouraging the building of stone churches, above all the Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Kiev, begun in the 1030s, and the Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Novgorod. She and Yaroslav had numerous children who became central to eleventh-century dynastic politics. Daughters included Elisiv, who married the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada; Anastasia, who married Andrew I of Hungary; and Anne, who married Henry I of France and later served as queen and regent there. Sons included Vladimir, who predeceased his father as prince of Novgorod; Iziaslav, Sviatoslav, and Vsevolod, each of whom occupied the Kievan throne; and others such as Igor and Vyacheslav. Through this progeny Ingegerd stands in the ancestry of many medieval and later European dynasties.

Ingegerd's reputation for piety led the Orthodox Church to venerate her as a saint, usually under the monastic name Anna, and she is often called Saint Anna of Novgorod. Hagiographical accounts claim that she took the veil, but early narrative sources do not describe a monastic career in detail, and the conventional death date of 10 February 1050 falls before the death of Yaroslav in 1054, which complicates stories that she entered religion as a widow. She is believed to have been buried in the Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Kiev; a marble sarcophagus there has traditionally been identified as the tomb of Yaroslav and his wife. Her principal feast is 10 February; some Orthodox calendars also commemorate a translation of relics on 4 October. Veneration has been strongest in the Russian Orthodox tradition and in Novgorod, and she has been remembered in Sweden as well, including in some Lutheran calendars of saints. Surviving evidence for her biography is thin and must be assembled cautiously from sagas, Rus' chronicles, and later liturgical texts.
