Biography

Short Description

Saint Ingenuinus, also known as Ingenuin, Ingenuino, or Ingwin, was bishop of Säben (Latin Sabiona) in the late sixth century. Säben was a fortified episcopal centre on a hill above the Eisack (Isarco) valley in what is now South Tyrol. He is the earliest bishop of that see who can be documented from contemporary sources rather than from later legend. The diocese lay on a major Alpine corridor between Bavarian lands to the north and the Lombard kingdom to the south, and it belonged ecclesiastically to the metropolitan orbit of Aquileia.

Ingenuinus is named in the correspondence of Pope Gregory the Great. In 591 Gregory wrote concerning the Three Chapters controversy, the lingering schism in which many bishops of the province of Aquileia refused to accept the condemnation of certain writings issued by the Second Council of Constantinople in 553. Ingenuinus thus appears as a historical figure in the church politics of the Alpine and north Italian region at the close of the sixth century. Later tradition also associates him with synodal activity in the province, though the precise details of any synod he attended are not securely established from contemporary records.

Apart from the papal letters, almost nothing about his life can be verified. Medieval hagiography and diocesan tradition portray him as a pastor who guided his flock during Lombard expansion and the religious tension between Catholic populations and Arian Lombard rulers, with Säben’s hilltop complex remembered as both episcopal seat and place of refuge. No reliable source records his birthplace, family, or the exact circumstances of his death. Later episcopal catalogues and chroniclers assign his death to about 605, a date that has become conventional but is not confirmed by a contemporary obituary.

Veneration of Ingenuinus developed within the church that later moved its seat from Säben to Brixen (Bressanone). In the late tenth century Bishop Albuin transferred the bishop’s residence to Brixen; relics attributed to Ingenuinus were eventually enshrined in Brixen Cathedral together with those of Albuin. The two bishops are commemorated jointly on 5 February and are honoured as patrons of the Diocese of Bolzano-Brixen. Ingenuinus was not the subject of a formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense; his cult rests on ancient diocesan and popular devotion. He remains a founding figure in the documented history of the see of Säben-Brixen, even though the secure core of his biography is limited to his office, his appearance in Gregory’s letters, and his local liturgical memory.
