Biography

Short Description

Innocent of Alaska, known in the world as Ivan Evseyevich Popov and later called Veniaminov, was born in 1797 in the Siberian village of Anginskoye in the Irkutsk Governorate of the Russian Empire. His father, a church sexton, died when Ivan was still a child, and the boy was raised in poverty, in part under the care of an uncle who was a deacon. He studied at the Irkutsk Theological Seminary, where his ability was recognized; he received the surname Veniaminov in honor of Bishop Veniamin of Irkutsk. In 1817 he married Catherine, the daughter of a local priest, and was ordained deacon. In 1821 he was ordained priest and assigned to parish service in Irkutsk. When a call went out for a priest willing to serve in the remote Russian colonies in Alaska, he volunteered, despite the hardship such a posting meant for a young family.

In 1824 he arrived with his family at Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands. Over the following decade he learned the Unangan (Aleut) language, devised a writing system for it, and translated the Gospel according to Matthew, a catechism, and liturgical texts so that the Christian faith could be heard in the people's own tongue. He built a church, taught practical skills, and traveled among scattered island settlements by baidarka, often in dangerous conditions. His later published Notes on the Islands of the Unalaska District combined ethnography, natural history, and linguistics and remain a fundamental source for the study of the Aleuts and of Russian America. In 1834 he was transferred to New Archangel (Sitka), the colonial capital, where he studied the Tlingit language and continued missionary and educational work among Native communities and the mixed colonial population.

While he was in European Russia in 1838–1839 reporting on the Alaskan mission and seeking support, his wife died. After a period of mourning he accepted monastic tonsure in 1840, receiving the name Innocent, and was consecrated bishop of Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and the Aleutian Islands, a diocese of enormous geographic extent. As bishop, and from 1850 as archbishop, he spent years in nearly constant travel by reindeer, dogsled, and boat across Kamchatka, Yakutia, the Kurils, and Alaska. He ordained Native and Creole clergy, founded schools and an orphanage, encouraged translations into local languages, and oversaw construction of St. Michael's Cathedral in Sitka. In 1868 he was appointed Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, then the senior see of the Russian Church under the Holy Synod. In that office he founded the Orthodox Missionary Society in 1870 to finance and organize missions, and he remained an advocate for the Alaskan and Siberian churches until his death in Moscow in 1879.

He was buried at the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. In 1977 he was glorified as a saint by the Orthodox Church in America and by the Russian Orthodox Church, with the titles Equal-to-the-Apostles and Enlightener of North America. His principal feast days are 31 March, the anniversary of his repose, and 6 October, commemorating his glorification. He is remembered as a pastor, linguist, and builder whose missionary labors established a lasting Orthodox presence among the peoples of Alaska and whose later administration linked that distant mission to the center of the Russian Church.
