Biography

Short Description

Saint Innocentia belongs to the large number of early Christian saints whose lives are known only through fragmentary liturgical notices and later local traditions rather than through contemporary historical records. The Latin name Innocentia, signifying innocence or purity, was borne by more than one holy woman in late antiquity, and the surviving sources do not permit a confident identification of a single biography. In the absence of acts of martyrdom, letters, or inscriptions that can be dated and localized with certainty, historians must treat the various notices with caution. What remains is the fact of her veneration in certain churches of Italy and the persistence of her name in martyrologies and local calendars.

One strand of tradition associates Innocentia with the city of Rimini on the Adriatic. There she is remembered as a young virgin who suffered martyrdom, possibly during the persecutions of the third or fourth century. Relics attributed to her have been kept in Rimini, and a feast on 16 September has been observed in some local usages. No reliable narrative of her passion survives, and it is possible that the cult grew around unidentified relics that were given her name in the early Middle Ages. Similar uncertainty surrounds any connection with other martyrs of the region.

A different hagiographical tradition links an Innocentia to the family of Saint Severus, bishop of Ravenna in the mid-fourth century. According to these accounts, Severus, originally a wool-comber, was married to Vincentia and was the father of Innocentia. After the death of his wife he was chosen bishop, attended the Council of Sardica, and died around 348. Innocentia is said to have died young and to have been buried with her parents; their relics were later translated. The family is sometimes commemorated together on 1 February. Whether this Innocentia is identical with the Rimini martyr, a distinct person, or a figure of pious legend cannot be established from the available evidence.

In either case, Innocentia was never the object of a formal process of canonization of the kind that became standard after the twelfth century. Her cult, like that of many ancient martyrs and confessors, arose from popular and episcopal veneration in late antiquity or the early Middle Ages. No widespread patronages are attached to her name in the major directories of saints, nor are precise dates of birth or death recorded. She remains an obscure witness whose memory was preserved locally, illustrating both the devotion of early Christian communities to their dead and the limits of our historical knowledge concerning many of the saints of that era.
