Biography
Innocenzo da Berzo was born Giovanni Scalvinoni on 19 March 1844 in the village of Niardo in the province of Brescia, then part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. His father, Giovanni Battista Scalvinoni, died while Giovanni was still an infant. His mother, Maria Elisabetta Crotti, brought him to her native village of Berzo Inferiore in the Camonica Valley, where he was raised in modest circumstances and from which he later took his religious toponym. He received elementary instruction locally and continued his studies at Lovere before entering the seminary of the Diocese of Brescia. The Camonica Valley and the Brescian church of the mid-nineteenth century formed the whole of his early world; the surviving record does not suggest wealth, high connections, or an education beyond that of a rural diocesan candidate for the priesthood.
He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Brescia in 1867 and spent the following years in ordinary parish ministry in mountain communities of the diocese, including service as a curate at Cevo and in Berzo Inferiore. He also undertook some teaching. Those who later testified about this period described a withdrawn, mortified young priest, already noted for devotion to the Eucharist and for patience with children whom he instructed in Christian doctrine. After several years of diocesan work he asked to be admitted among the Capuchin Franciscans. He entered the novitiate at Bovezzo in 1874, received the name Innocenzo da Berzo, and made his religious profession in that order. He was not appointed to positions of government in the order and remained a simple friar.
Most of his Capuchin life was passed in convents of the Lombard province, especially the house of the Santissima Annunziata in Bergamo. There he was employed in preaching popular missions and, above all, in the confessional, where he acquired a wide reputation for gentleness and discernment. His spirituality, so far as it can be reconstructed from contemporary witnesses, was that of a nineteenth-century Capuchin observant: frequent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, meditation on the Passion, Marian devotion, and a severe personal asceticism that he did not impose on others. He continued to gather children for catechesis and was remembered for treating them with particular kindness, a trait that later shaped his popular cult. People from the Valle Camonica who had known him as a diocesan priest still sought him out.
Innocenzo’s health was never strong. He died in the Capuchin convent at Bergamo on 3 September 1890, at the age of forty-six. Veneration at his tomb began soon after his death. His remains were subsequently translated to Berzo Inferiore, where a shrine developed around them. The processes for his beatification were conducted in the twentieth century, and Pope John XXIII declared him blessed on 12 November 1961. He has not been canonized. His liturgical commemoration is kept on 3 September. He is venerated especially at Berzo Inferiore and Niardo and throughout the Camonica Valley, and popular devotion regards him as a patron of Berzo Inferiore and of children.
