Biography

Short Description

Ioann Ioannovich Vostorgov (commonly known in secular usage as Ivan Ivanovich Vostorgov) was born on 20 January 1864 (8 January according to the Julian calendar) in the Cossack stanitsa of Kavkazskaya in the Kuban Oblast of the Russian Empire, the son of an Orthodox parish priest. He was educated at the Stavropol Theological Seminary, completing his studies in the 1880s, and entered the ranks of the white clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church. After ordination he served in the Stavropol diocese and in parishes of the Caucasus region, combining ordinary pastoral duties with teaching and with missionary work among Old Believers, sectarians, and non-Orthodox populations of the empire’s southern frontier. Contemporary accounts already noted his gifts as a preacher and his energy as an organizer of church schools and missionary efforts.

By the opening years of the twentieth century Vostorgov had become one of the most visible missionary priests in the Russian Church. He traveled widely on behalf of the Orthodox Missionary Society, inspecting and encouraging missions in Siberia, the Far East, Central Asia, and Persia, and he produced a substantial body of sermons, pamphlets, and practical manuals devoted to missionary method, catechesis, and the refutation of revolutionary and sectarian teachings. Raised to the rank of protoiereus (archpriest), he was established in Moscow, where he preached in major churches and took a leading part in right-wing monarchist organizations, above all the Union of the Russian People. In the pulpit and in the press he denounced socialism, liberalism, and the revolutionary movement as dangers to Orthodoxy and to the Russian autocracy, becoming a well-known and controversial public figure in the last years of the empire.

The collapse of the monarchy and the two revolutions of 1917 left Vostorgov in Moscow. He took part in the All-Russian Local Council of 1917–1918 and continued to exercise his ministry and to speak against Bolshevik policy toward the Church. In the wave of hostage-taking and executions that followed the assassination of Moisei Uritsky and the attempt on Vladimir Lenin in August 1918, he was arrested by the Cheka. On 5 September 1918 he was shot in Moscow together with Bishop Ephraim (Kuznetsov) of Selenginsk and a group of former imperial officials that included the former ministers Ivan Shcheglovitov, Nikolai Maklakov, and Alexei Khvostov. He was buried in a mass grave associated with the Bratskoye Cemetery (Bratskie Mogily) in Moscow.

Vostorgov was thereafter venerated as a victim of the Soviet persecution of the clergy. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia glorified him among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in 1981. The Moscow Patriarchate canonized him as a hieromartyr at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of August 2000. His memory is kept on 5 September (23 August on the Julian calendar) and together with the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church.
