Biography

Short Description

Iosif Zaonikievskiy, known in English as Joseph of Zaonikievo, was a Russian Orthodox monk, hermit, and wonderworker of the Vologda lands in northern Russia in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Traditional hagiographical accounts identify him as a peasant by birth from the village of Ozerets (also given as Ozeretskoye) in the Vologda district. His name in the world was Ilarion. The surviving vitae say little about his family or childhood beyond ascribing to him piety from an early age. In youth or early adulthood he became completely blind. That affliction, according to the received tradition, led him to intensified prayer, especially to the Mother of God.

The Theotokos is said to have appeared to him and directed him to a wooded place some distance from Vologda, later called Zaonikievo. There he found an icon of the Mother of God, regarded as a copy of the Vladimir Icon, thereafter known as the Zaonikievskaya Icon. At the discovery of the image his sight was restored. In thanksgiving he remained at the site as a solitary and built a chapel for the icon. Disciples and pilgrims gathered, and a small monastic community formed. Ilarion received the monastic tonsure with the name Joseph. The house became known as the Zaonikievskaya Hermitage of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.

Joseph was remembered as an ascetic and wonderworker. Healings and other miracles were attributed to his prayers and to the icon associated with his eremitical vocation. He died in 1612 and was buried at the monastery he had founded. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 21 September. His relics and the icon remained focal points of local pilgrimage. Like many northern Russian monasteries, the Zaonikievo house later suffered decline, closure in the Soviet period, and partial revival in more recent times, while the saint’s cult continued in liturgical calendars and among the faithful of the Vologda region.

Because Iosif Zaonikievskiy belonged to the class of peasant-born northern hermits whose lives were recorded mainly in monastery tradition and synaxaria rather than in rich contemporary archives, many biographical particulars remain unknown. No verified year of birth has been established. The consistent core of the tradition—the origin in Ozerets, the blindness and miraculous healing, the finding of the icon, the foundation of the hermitage, monastic life under the name Joseph, and death in 1612—forms the basis of his veneration as one of the monastic saints of the Russian North.
