Biography

Short Description

Irenaeus of Sirmium was a Christian bishop of the late third and early fourth centuries who held the see of Sirmium, a major city of the Roman province of Pannonia (the site of present-day Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia). In the Tetrarchic period Sirmium was one of the principal imperial residences of the empire, and a Christian community was already established there when Irenaeus served as its bishop. Virtually nothing is known of his birth, family origins, education, or the date of his consecration. The historical record concerning him is confined almost entirely to the circumstances of his arrest and death during the Great Persecution initiated by the emperors Diocletian and Maximian.

The chief source for his martyrdom is the Passio Irenaei (Acts of Irenaeus), a Latin passion narrative that modern scholars generally regard as possessing a relatively solid historical core by comparison with many later, more legendary martyr acts. According to this account, Irenaeus was seized after the imperial edicts of 303 required Christians to surrender the scriptures and to offer sacrifice to the traditional gods of Rome. He was brought before Probus, prefect of Pannonia. In the recorded interrogation he openly confessed that he was a Christian and a bishop and refused to comply with the edict. When asked whether he had a wife and children, he acknowledged that he did, yet he declined to save his life for their sake, declaring that God would be their true father and that his first duty was fidelity to Christ.

Probus subjected him to torture and imprisonment in an effort to obtain compliance. Irenaeus remained steadfast through further hearings. He was finally condemned to death and beheaded, an event traditionally dated to 304. The passion states that his body was thrown into the river Savus (the Sava). No securely identified tomb or later translation of relics is documented in early sources. His principal feast in the Western tradition is 6 April, the date under which he appears in the Roman Martyrology as bishop and martyr of Sirmium; he is also named in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum. His cult belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational veneration of local martyrs rather than to any later papal canonization. He is not recorded as pope, patriarch, or member of a monastic order. Beyond the passion and the early martyrological notices, later legend did not substantially embroider his life, and he remains an obscure but historically plausible figure of the Diocletianic persecution in the Danubian provinces.
