Biography

Short Description

Irenarch of Rostov, known in secular life as Ilya, was born in 1547 in the village of Kondakovo in the Rostov district of the Tsardom of Russia, to a peasant family. The principal narrative source for his life is a hagiographical account written by his disciple, the monk Alexander, who served as his cell attendant. According to that tradition, Ilya was drawn to piety from an early age. At about the age of thirty he left his home and entered the Monastery of Saints Boris and Gleb (Borisoglebsky Monastery) on the Ustye River, not far from Rostov Veliky. There he received the monastic tonsure and the name Irenarch.

In the monastery Irenarch chose the life of a recluse. He remained for long periods in a confined cell and practiced severe asceticism. Later accounts describe him as binding himself with heavy iron chains, an iron belt or cap, and a large iron cross, and as observing strict fasting, lengthy prayer, and silence, leaving his cell chiefly for the liturgical services of the church. Over many years of this discipline he acquired a reputation for spiritual discernment and foresight, and people of the surrounding region sought his counsel and blessing.

His later years coincided with the Time of Troubles in the early seventeenth century, when Russia suffered dynastic collapse, famine, social unrest, and intervention by Polish-Lithuanian forces. Monastic tradition records that Irenarch foretold coming calamities and that various figures connected with those events visited his cell. He is described as having received representatives of the occupying forces and, later, as having given encouragement and blessing to Russian leaders associated with the national militia that took part in the liberation of Moscow, including the circle of Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. These episodes, preserved in the Life by Alexander and in later church tradition, made him a notable spiritual figure of that turbulent period.

Irenarch died on 13 January 1616 and was buried at the Borisoglebsky Monastery. His chains and other personal items were kept as relics. Local veneration developed at the monastery and in the Rostov region; he was subsequently numbered among the saints of the Russian Orthodox Church. He is commemorated on 13 January, the day of his repose, and is also remembered with other Rostov wonderworkers. The Life written by Alexander remains the main source for his biography, and later synaxaria of the Russian Church follow its essential outline.
