Biography

Short Description

Irmina of Oeren, also known as Irmina of Trier, was a Frankish noblewoman and abbess of the later Merovingian age, active in Austrasia in the region of Trier during the late seventh and early eighth centuries. Later medieval tradition, given its most influential literary form in Alcuin’s Life of Saint Willibrord, made her a daughter of the Merovingian king Dagobert II. Modern historical criticism has generally set that royal parentage aside as a subsequent genealogical construction rather than a fact established by contemporary evidence, and her precise ancestry and place of birth remain unknown. What the sources do establish is that she belonged to the high aristocracy of Austrasia and that she was the wife of Hugobert, who held the offices of seneschal and count palatine at the Merovingian court.

Hugobert died at an uncertain date before 697 or 698. Irmina and Hugobert are widely accepted as the parents of Plectrude, who married Pepin of Herstal, mayor of the palace of Austrasia, and of Adela, foundress and abbess of the monastery of Pfalzel near Trier. Other daughters have been ascribed to them in later reconstructions, among them Regintrud, Chrodelind, and Bertrada of Prüm (Bertrada the Elder), though these identifications are not all equally secure. Through Plectrude, Irmina stood close to the Pippinid house that would give rise to the Carolingian dynasty. Documentary evidence of her marriage and children sits in tension with later hagiographical legend, which sometimes recast her as a betrothed virgin who entered religion after the death of a fiancé; the charters show her instead as a widow and mother who then took the veil.

After Hugobert’s death Irmina entered the religious life and became abbess of the women’s monastery of Oeren (also called Horreum or Ören) in Trier, a house later known under her name as the Abbey of Saint Irmina. The site occupied former Roman granaries in the city. In 697 or 698, as a widow, she granted her estate at Echternach, on the Sauer in what is now Luxembourg, to the Northumbrian missionary Willibrord. That gift, recorded in a surviving charter, furnished the landed foundation of the monastery of Echternach, which Willibrord developed into a major missionary and cultural centre on the Frankish–Frisian frontier. Pepin of Herstal supported the same foundation. Irmina thus appears in the contemporary record as both a monastic superior and a principal lay patron of the Anglo-Saxon mission on the Continent.

She is last attested in the early eighth century and is traditionally said to have died in 708, the year adopted in standard liturgical and historical reference works, although the exact day and year rest on later tradition rather than a strictly contemporary obituary. Her feast is kept on 24 December. Veneration grew at Trier and at Echternach; she was honoured as a saint long before the age of formal papal canonization, and her cult belongs to the pre-congregation period of the Latin Church. The convent of Oeren preserved her memory, and she remains a figure of regional importance for the ecclesiastical history of the Moselle country and for the early history of Echternach.
