Biography

Short Description

Isaac of Armenia, known in Armenian as Sahak Partev (Sahak the Parthian) and often called Isaac the Great, was catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the late fourth and early fifth centuries and a principal architect of Armenian Christian letters. He belonged to the hereditary Gregorid house descended from Gregory the Illuminator. His father was Catholicos Nerses I, called Nerses the Great. Precise year and place of birth are not securely documented in contemporary sources and later traditions disagree, though he is consistently described as a man of great age at his death. He received a learned education that included Greek and Syriac as well as Armenian, and later Armenian historians associate part of his formation with Constantinople. In the generation after the partition of the Armenian kingdom between the Eastern Roman Empire and Sasanian Persia (conventionally dated to 387), he was raised to the catholicosate, succeeding in a line that had been interrupted by political and ecclesiastical disorder.

His long tenure as catholicos unfolded under the double pressure of Roman and Persian overlordship. In the Persian sector of Armenia the Arsacid monarchy was abolished in 428, and Sasanian authorities then removed Isaac from office. Armenian tradition presents the deposition as a consequence of his resistance to Persian political control and to pressures on the Armenian Church, and of his standing with the native nobility. Even after he ceased to hold the official catholicosate he remained a spiritual and intellectual authority. He did not attend the Council of Ephesus in 431 in person, but the Armenian Church under his influence accepted that council’s teaching. His career thus belongs to the period in which the Armenian Church was defining its own hierarchy, liturgy, and literary language while still in contact with the Greek and Syriac Christian worlds.

Isaac’s lasting historical importance rests on his collaboration with the monk and scholar Mesrop Mashtots. Around the beginning of the fifth century they are credited with the invention of the Armenian alphabet and with directing the first translation of the Bible into Armenian, a version later associated with both names and subsequently revised. Isaac also promoted translations of liturgical books, conciliar canons, and patristic texts, work that established a distinct Armenian ecclesiastical literature and reduced dependence on Greek and Syriac for worship and doctrine. Later Armenian memory groups him with Mesrop and other scholars as one of the Holy Translators (Surb Targmanichk). These labors took place while Armenia was divided and while the catholicosate itself was politically vulnerable, which makes the scale of the literary project all the more central to later national and church tradition.

Traditional Armenian historiography, including Movses Khorenatsi, places Isaac’s death in 439 in the village of Blur in the district of Bagrevand. He is recorded as having at least one daughter, Sahakanush (Sahakanoysh), who married Hamazasp of the Mamikonian house; through that marriage the Gregorid ecclesiastical lineage was joined to one of Armenia’s leading noble families, and later figures such as Vardan Mamikonian were counted among his descendants. The name of his wife is not preserved in the sources commonly cited. He was venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic Church and appears in some Western martyrologies; a feast on 9 September is associated with him in Latin tradition, while the Armenian Church commemorates him among the Holy Translators and on other days of its own calendar. Many details of his early life, the exact chronology of his first years in office, and the circumstances of his burial remain dependent on later narrative sources rather than on strictly contemporary records.
