Biography

Short Description

The single name Isaac, given without a Wikidata identifier, Wikipedia article, epithet, century, or place, does not identify one historical person. In Jewish, Christian, and Islamic memory the name belongs to many figures whose lives cannot be collapsed into one set of dates, offices, or family facts. The best-known include the biblical patriarch Isaac, son of Abraham and Sarah; Isaac of Nineveh (Isaac the Syrian), a seventh-century East Syriac monk and briefly bishop; Sahak (Isaac) of Armenia, a catholicos of the Armenian Church in late antiquity; Isaac, a seventh-century Coptic pope of Alexandria; Byzantine monastic saints such as Isaac of Dalmatia; and the Jesuit martyr Isaac Jogues. Because these men differ in era, geography, marital status, and rank, no verified birth year, death year, burial place, feast day, or patronage list can be attached to an unspecified Isaac without inventing a subject the sources do not support.

The biblical Isaac is described in Genesis as the child of promise born to Abraham and Sarah, the husband of Rebekah, and the father of Esau and Jacob, living in Canaan. Later religious chronologies sometimes assign him years in the second millennium BCE, but those figures are reconstructed from genealogical schemes rather than from contemporary records and are not treated here as verified historical dates. In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam he is honored as a patriarch in the ancestral sense. That usage is not the same as holding the later ecclesiastical office of Patriarch or Catholicos of an Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East see, nor was he Bishop of Rome. Formal medieval or modern canonization and a single universal feast day do not apply to him in a uniform, documentable way.

Isaac of Nineveh is a historical monastic author of the Church of the East, associated with Beth Qatraye and a short tenure as bishop of Nineveh before he returned to solitude. His ascetical homilies survive in Syriac and in later translations and were widely read in Eastern Christian communities that came to venerate him as a saint. Scholarly literature places him in the seventh century; precise civil years of birth and death remain uncertain. He is not known to have married. Other firmly attested bearers of the name include Sahak the Great of Armenia, often dated to the late fourth and early fifth centuries and remembered as a catholicos who promoted Armenian ecclesiastical life and literature; Pope Isaac of Alexandria, a Coptic pope of the later seventh century; and Isaac Jogues, born at Orléans in 1607, a Jesuit missionary killed in 1646 in what is now New York State and canonized in 1930 by Pope Pius XI, with a feast commonly kept on 19 October among the North American Martyrs.

These lives cannot share one spouse, one set of children, one religious order, or one cult. Fields that would require choosing among them are therefore left blank. A complete hagiographical notice needs a further qualifier—century, see, order, martyrdom, or a stable catalogue identifier—so that dates, places, and veneration can be checked against the relevant primary texts and standard historical works rather than guessed.
