Biography

Short Description

Isabel Larrañaga Ramírez was born in Manila on 19 November 1836, during Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. She was the daughter of Juan Francisco Larrañaga, a Spanish military officer from Azpeitia in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa, and Isabel Ramírez, a native of Manila. Baptized in the Cathedral of Manila, she grew up in a Catholic household of Spanish and Philippine background. After her father’s death the family’s circumstances changed, and in 1855 she and her mother left the islands and settled in Madrid, where she would spend much of her adult life.

In Madrid she discerned a vocation to consecrated life and to the service of the poor and of education. She wished to enter the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, but her mother’s opposition prevented her from doing so, and she remained a devout laywoman engaged in works of charity. After her mother’s death she was free to follow her calling more fully. On 2 February 1877 she founded in Madrid the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Hermanas de la Caridad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús). The new institute was dedicated to the Christian education of girls and to charitable assistance of those in need, under the spiritual patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The congregation expanded from Madrid to other parts of Spain and to Cuba, then still a Spanish possession. Mother Isabel spent extended periods in Havana directing schools and works of mercy. Contemporary accounts of her life, largely those assembled later for her cause, describe a combination of devotion to the Sacred Heart with the practical government of a growing community of sisters. She died in Havana on 17 January 1899, shortly after Spain’s loss of Cuba in the Spanish-American War of 1898.

The Catholic Church later opened a cause for her beatification. On 26 March 1999 Pope John Paul II promulgated the decree recognizing her heroic virtues, and she received the title Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized. The congregation she founded continues educational and charitable work in several countries. Outside the documentation prepared for her cause, published historical material on her life remains relatively limited, but the principal facts of her birth in Manila, her transfer to Spain, the foundation of 1877, and her death in Havana are consistently attested.
