Biography

Short Description

Isabela de Rosis, also recorded in Italian sources as Isabella De Rosis, was a nineteenth-century Italian Catholic religious sister and foundress. She was born in Naples in 1842, when that city was still the capital of the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Her family belonged to the southern Italian nobility and was connected with Castrovillari in Calabria. She was raised in the Catholic aristocratic world of mid-century Naples, in which piety, household charity, and the education of daughters in a Christian setting were expected. Widely available historical literature says little that can be independently verified about her childhood, schooling, or the precise unfolding of her vocation; congregational tradition presents her as having felt an early call to religious life and to service of the poor.

After Italian unification she turned her energies to the education of girls and to works of mercy in the Mezzogiorno, a region then marked by poverty, limited schooling for women, and social strain. Despite recurring ill health she established a community of sisters at Castrovillari in the province of Cosenza. The institute, known as the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Suore del Sacro Cuore di Gesù), took as its purposes the Christian education of young women, especially the poor, care of the sick and abandoned, and devotion to the Sacred Heart. Like many female foundations of that century, it began in modest material conditions and had to secure the support of the local bishop and, in time, of the Holy See. Exact foundation and approbation dates are not uniformly reported in general reference works and are therefore not repeated here.

De Rosis served as superior and formator of the first generations of sisters. Accounts preserved by her congregation describe a woman who joined the manners of a noble upbringing to a life of evangelical simplicity and Eucharistic piety. The sisters faced the ordinary hardships of a new institute: scarcity of means, the need to train teachers and nurses, and the task of opening schools and charitable works in Calabria and nearby districts. Over the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the congregation obtained diocesan recognition and extended its activity, remaining a relatively local southern Italian foundation during her lifetime.

She died in 1911 at Castrovillari, where the motherhouse of the institute stood. She was not beatified or canonized, has no place on the universal liturgical calendar, and has no officially assigned patronages in standard hagiographical references. Her memory is kept chiefly among the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and in regional religious history of Calabria and Naples. The schools and charitable works continued by her congregation form the principal documented legacy of her life. Because she remains obscure outside specialist Catholic and local Italian sources, many personal details—family circumstances, the full sequence of the foundation, and the course of her last illness—cannot be verified from widely available reliable historical literature.
