Biography

Short Description

Isabella Tomasi was born in 1645 at Palma di Montechiaro in southern Sicily, a town established in the seventeenth century under the patronage of her own family. She belonged to the Tomasi, Dukes of Palma and later Princes of Lampedusa, a noble house of Spanish Sicily whose public piety was as conspicuous as its rank. Her father, Giulio Tomasi, was a leading local magnate who endowed churches and a Benedictine monastery in the settlement he had founded. Several of her brothers and sisters also entered religion. The best known of them is her younger brother Giuseppe Maria Tomasi (1649–1713), who joined the Theatines, became a cardinal, and was canonized in 1986. A later descendant of the same lineage, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, wrote the novel The Leopard. The family’s combination of aristocratic foundation-building and Counter-Reformation devotion is typical of the Catholic nobility of seventeenth-century Sicily.

In her youth Isabella entered the Benedictine monastery of the Most Holy Rosary (Monastero del Santissimo Rosario) at Palma di Montechiaro, taking the religious name Maria Crocifissa, sometimes recorded more fully as Maria Crocifissa della Concezione. The house was closely tied to Tomasi patronage. As a choir nun she lived under the Rule of Saint Benedict and the strict enclosure characteristic of post-Tridentine Sicily. Contemporary notices, written in the idiom of Baroque hagiography, describe her as given to penance and as subject to unusual spiritual trials. The episode that later carried her name beyond the island occurred in August 1671, when she was found in her cell with a sheet covered in a compact, unidentified script. According to the sisters who discovered her, she said that the Devil had compelled her to write. The document, often called the “letter of the Devil,” was kept in the monastery. It was not deciphered in her lifetime, and later attempts to read it with cryptographic or computer methods remain speculative and are not an established historical or linguistic result.

Isabella Tomasi remained in the same community for the rest of her life and died there in 1699. She was never beatified or canonized; no Roman process in her cause reached completion, and she should not be confused with other Italian women religious who bore the name Maria Crocifissa and who have been raised to the altars. Memory of her has been preserved in local Sicilian tradition, in the archives and lore of the Palma monastery, and in popular interest in the undeciphered letter. Serious historical treatment places her among the many enclosed nuns of seventeenth-century Catholic Europe whose inner lives were interpreted through the categories of mysticism, diabolical assault, and heroic virtue, without independent corroboration of the more extraordinary claims.

The religious culture of Spanish Sicily in the later seventeenth century was marked by intense Marian and penitential devotion and by a readiness to read illness, trance, and automatic writing as spiritual combat. Isabella’s family, by founding a town, a church, and a monastery, enacted the Tridentine ideal of the Catholic noble household; her own vocation and the stories later attached to her belong to that world. Beyond the letter and the outline of her monastic career, the surviving evidence is limited. She left no widely published writings and does not appear in the Roman martyrology. What can be said with confidence is that she lived and died as a Benedictine nun of Palma di Montechiaro, that she was a sister of Saint Giuseppe Maria Tomasi, and that a curious undeciphered text associated with her name has kept a modest place in Sicilian cultural memory.
