Biography

Short Description

Isaiah the Solitary, also known in the ancient sources as Isaiah of Gaza, Isaiah of Scetis, and Abba Isaiah, was a Christian monk, hermit, and ascetic writer of the fifth century. Almost nothing can be established about his family, the place of his birth, or the year in which he was born. Contemporary and near-contemporary writers present him as an Egyptian who took up the monastic life in the desert of Scetis (the Wadi El Natrun) in Lower Egypt, then one of the principal landscapes of Christian eremitism. In Scetis he would have been formed in the traditions later gathered in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers. A number of apophthegms circulate under the name of Abba Isaiah, though modern scholars differ on how many of these sayings belong to the same person as the later hermit of Gaza. His early discipline was that of the Egyptian desert: manual work, psalmody, fasting, obedience to an elder, and the struggle against the passions.

At a date that cannot be fixed with precision, Isaiah left Egypt and settled in southern Palestine, in the hinterland of Gaza. He established himself at Beit Daltha (Beth Daltha), a locality described as lying a few miles from Gaza and from its port of Maiuma. There he lived as an anchorite and gradually attracted disciples, so that a small monastic community formed around his cell. In the later fifth century the Gaza region was a major center of Palestinian monasticism and, after the Council of Chalcedon in 451, a stronghold of opposition to that council’s Christological definition. Anti-Chalcedonian literature from the Gaza circle, especially the Plerophoriae and the Life of Peter the Iberian by John Rufus, portrays Abba Isaiah of Egypt as a revered holy man of the district, in contact with Peter the Iberian and with other Miaphysite monks and bishops. Those sources are confessional and hagiographic, but they confirm his presence, his Egyptian origin, and the high reputation he enjoyed before his death.

Isaiah’s lasting importance rests on the writings transmitted under his name, above all the Asceticon, or Ascetic Discourses. In the principal Greek recension this work comprises twenty-nine discourses on the practical and inner life of the monk, treating repentance, humility, discretion, the cutting off of self-will, warfare with thoughts and passions, stillness (hesychia), and the guarding of the heart. A shorter series of twenty-seven chapters entitled On Guarding the Intellect circulated under his name and was later included in the Philokalia compiled by Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain and Macarius of Corinth, through which it entered the standard spiritual reading of the Orthodox world. The Asceticon was translated at an early date into Syriac, Coptic, Armenian, Arabic, Georgian, and Ethiopic, evidence of its use across linguistic and confessional boundaries in the Christian East. The teaching stands in the Evagrian and Egyptian tradition: it is not a speculative theology but a pedagogy of watchfulness (nepsis), diagnosis of the passions, and slow formation of the inner man.

Palestinian tradition, reflected in the Georgian recension of the Jerusalem lectionary and accepted by most modern historians of monasticism, places his death on 11 August 491 at his monastery near Gaza. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is commonly commemorated on 3 July; the older Jerusalem calendar remembered him on the day of his death. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later Western type; his cult arose from local monastic memory and liturgical commemoration. He held no episcopal or patriarchal office. Modern scholarship has long discussed whether Isaiah of Scetis (the Egyptian father of the sayings) and Isaiah of Gaza (the author of the Asceticon who died in 491) are one man or two. Specialists such as Lucien Regnault and Derwas J. Chitty argued for a single career that began in Scetis and ended near Gaza; others have preferred to keep the figures distinct or to treat the Asceticon as a compilation. The evidence does not permit a fully closed biography, but it is sufficient to place a historically real Egyptian monk named Isaiah in the Gaza region in the second half of the fifth century and to associate with him a corpus that shaped Eastern Christian asceticism for many centuries.
