Biography

Short Description

Saint Ischyrion was a Christian of Roman Egypt whose martyrdom is attested in a contemporary letter of Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria, later excerpted by Eusebius of Caesarea in Book VI of the Ecclesiastical History. Dionysius describes him as the steward (oikonomos) of one of the magistrates or rulers of Egypt, a lay household official rather than a cleric or monk. During the enforcement of the imperial requirement to sacrifice to the pagan gods in the Decian persecution of the mid-third century, his master ordered him to comply. Ischyrion refused.

According to the same account, the magistrate first subjected him to insults and pressure. When Ischyrion remained steadfast and would not offer sacrifice, he was killed by having a large stake driven through his body, piercing his bowels. Dionysius places this death among the sufferings of Christians both in the cities and in the Egyptian countryside (the chora), so the precise locality is not recorded. The method of execution and the victim’s status as a steward of a civil official are the details that later martyrologies retain.

Nothing reliable is known of Ischyrion’s parentage, birthplace within Egypt, earlier career, or family life. He is not described as a soldier in the earliest source, though some later notices have occasionally given him a military identity, probably by confusion with other Egyptian martyrs of similar name. He was not a bishop, patriarch, or member of a religious order. No ancient writer records a spouse, children, or place of burial.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 22 December, repeating the refusal to sacrifice and death by impalement. His cult is that of an ancient liturgical martyr, not the result of a later papal canonization. Later Coptic synaxaria honour one or more soldiers named Ischyrion (Eskhyron), sometimes localized at Qellin in the Delta and dated to the Diocletianic persecution; those notices are distinct in occupation, date, and geography from the steward described by Dionysius and should not be conflated with him. No specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are securely attached to his name in the early sources.
