Biography

Short Description

Isidore Bakanja was born in 1887 in the village of Bokendela in the Congo Free State, the Central African territory then under the personal rule of King Leopold II of Belgium and later organized as the Belgian Congo. Surviving records say little about his family or childhood. In his late teens he left his village to seek work and encountered Belgian Trappist (Cistercian) missionaries active in the region around Coquilhatville (present-day Mbandaka). After catechesis he was baptized on 6 May 1906 and given the name Isidore. He was then about eighteen or nineteen. He received Confirmation and First Communion and became a fervent convert who learned the catechism and shared it with others.

After baptism he found employment as a domestic servant for a Belgian colonial agent connected with the rubber economy. He practiced his faith openly, wearing a rosary and the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, to which he was especially devoted, and speaking of the Gospel to fellow Congolese workers. His employer, hostile both to the Catholic missions and to Christian observance among laborers, forbade these practices and ordered him to discard the scapular. Bakanja refused, saying he would not remove the sign of his faith.

The refusal led to a savage flogging with a chicotte, a hippopotamus-hide whip into which nails had been driven. The beating tore his back and sides. He was then left without proper care. Missionaries later found him in a desperate condition, with infected wounds, and brought him to a mission station. He lingered for months in great pain. Witnesses recorded that he forgave the man who had ordered the punishment and that he continued to pray, invoking Jesus and Mary. He died of his injuries on 15 August 1909, the feast of the Assumption.

The Catholic Church came to regard his death as martyrdom in odium fidei. After the usual investigation, Pope John Paul II beatified him on 24 April 1994. He has not been canonized. Blessed Isidore is remembered as an early modern African lay martyr and as a witness of fidelity under the forced-labor regime of the Congo Free State and early Belgian Congo. Though closely associated with Carmelite devotion because of the scapular he would not abandon, he remained a layman and was never a member of a religious order.
