Biography

Short Description

Isidore of Seville was born around 560 in Cartagena, in Hispania, then under Visigothic rule and affected by the Byzantine occupation of the southeastern coast (the province of Spania). He belonged to a distinguished Hispano-Roman family. His father, Severianus, was a man of high rank associated with Cartagena; after that city came under Byzantine control, the family settled in Seville. Isidore’s siblings were later honored as saints: Leander, who became Archbishop of Seville and a principal architect of the Visigothic conversion from Arianism; Fulgentius, Bishop of Astigi (Écija); and Florentina, an abbess for whom Isidore wrote guidance on monastic life. Orphaned relatively young, he was educated under Leander’s direction in Seville, acquiring Latin letters, some Greek and Hebrew, and a wide acquaintance with Scripture, the Church Fathers, and surviving classical authors.

Upon Leander’s death around the year 600, Isidore succeeded him as Archbishop of Seville and metropolitan of the church in Visigothic Hispania, an office he held until 636. He continued his brother’s work of consolidating Catholic orthodoxy after King Reccared’s conversion from Arianism in 589. He enjoyed close relations with several Visigothic monarchs, including Sisebut, to whom he dedicated a treatise on nature. He presided over the Second Synod of Seville in 619, which dealt with heresy and episcopal jurisdiction, and over the Fourth Council of Toledo in 633, the most important Spanish council of the seventh century. The Toledo decrees sought liturgical uniformity throughout the kingdom, required bishops to establish schools for the training of clergy, regulated ecclesiastical discipline, and addressed the legal status of Jews. Isidore thus helped to shape both the intellectual culture and the institutional church of Visigothic Spain.

His literary output made him the most influential encyclopedist of the early Middle Ages. The Etymologiae (also called Origines), in twenty books, assembled definitions and explanations of the arts and sciences, law, medicine, the Church, languages, animals, geography, and everyday objects, often by means of etymology. Copied throughout Europe, it served as a standard reference until the twelfth century and beyond. Other works include the Historia de regibus Gothorum, Vandalorum et Suevorum, a history of the barbarian kingdoms in Spain; De natura rerum, on cosmology and natural phenomena; Differentiae and Synonyma; De ecclesiasticis officiis, on liturgy and holy orders; a monastic rule; biblical commentaries; and the Sententiae, a handbook of doctrine and morals drawn especially from Augustine and Gregory the Great. Medieval writers regarded him as the last of the Latin Church Fathers. The Eighth Council of Toledo in 653 praised him as an extraordinary doctor and the most learned man of recent times.

Isidore died in Seville on 4 April 636 and was first buried there. In 1063 King Ferdinand I of León had his relics translated to León, where they remain in the Basilica of San Isidoro. Veneration of Isidore was strong in medieval Spain from an early date. Pope Clement VIII formally canonized him in 1598, and Pope Innocent XIII proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church in 1722. His feast is kept on 4 April. In 1997 Pope John Paul II named him patron of the Internet and of computer users, in recognition of his role as a compiler and organizer of knowledge. He is also invoked as a patron of students, computer programmers and technicians, and the city of Seville.
