Biography

Short Description

Isidore the Laborer, known in Spanish as San Isidro Labrador, is the medieval farmworker venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church and as the principal patron of Madrid. Traditional accounts locate his birth in Madrid in the late eleventh century, in a poor Christian family that gave him the name of Saint Isidore of Seville. No contemporary charter or chronicle mentions him; the outline of his life depends on later Castilian legend and on the testimonies collected for his beatification and canonization in the seventeenth century. In his youth Madrid was still a minor settlement. It passed from the Muslim Taifa of Toledo into the hands of Alfonso VI of León and Castile in 1085, so Isidore’s lifetime, as usually reconstructed, belongs to the first generations of Christian Madrid.

According to the received story, Isidore worked throughout his adult life as a hired agricultural labourer for a well-to-do landowner named Juan de Vargas, whose fields lay in the countryside near the town. He married María Torribia, a woman of similar humble station who is venerated in Spain as Santa María de la Cabeza. The couple had a son. Hagiography relates that the child once fell into a well and was saved when the water rose miraculously at his parents’ prayer; the boy nevertheless died in childhood. After that bereavement, Isidore and María are said to have lived the rest of their marriage in continence, as brother and sister, while remaining together. María survived her husband and developed her own local cult.

The portrait of Isidore that emerged in legend is that of a labourer whose work and prayer were inseparable. He is described as attending Mass every morning before going to the fields, a habit that sometimes made him late in the eyes of fellow workers or of his master. Stories claimed that angels yoked the oxen and ploughed in his stead so that the work was not neglected, that grain was multiplied by miracle, and that springs of water appeared when he prayed in drought. He was remembered for sharing his modest food with the poor and for gentleness toward animals. None of these episodes can be verified by independent evidence, but they fixed his identity as a saint of rural labour, daily worship, and charity.

Tradition assigns his death to Madrid on 15 May in the early twelfth century, most commonly the year 1130, although some older notices give 1172. He was buried in the cemetery of the church of San Andrés. In later medieval and early modern times his body was reported to be incorrupt and was translated; it is now enshrined in the Colegiata de San Isidro in Madrid. Civic and royal interest in the cult grew in the sixteenth century. Pope Paul V beatified Isidore on 2 May 1619. Pope Gregory XV canonized him on 12 March 1622, together with Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Ávila, and Philip Neri, in a ceremony that presented a cluster of Spanish and Italian saints to the post-Tridentine Church. The Roman Martyrology and the general calendar keep his feast on 15 May.

From the seventeenth century onward Isidore has been invoked as patron of farmers, peasants, day labourers, and agricultural workers, of agriculture and livestock, and of rural communities more broadly. He is the patron saint of the city of Madrid and of numerous towns in Spain and Latin America, including places such as La Ceiba and Tocoa in Honduras and El Gobernador in Jalisco. In the United States he was taken as patron of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. Blessings of fields, processions, and popular festivals on or near 15 May remain widespread in the Hispanic world. Together with María de la Cabeza he is also held up as an example of holiness in married life among the working poor. Historical caution requires repeating that almost every personal detail rests on pious tradition rather than on eleventh- or twelfth-century documents; the public cult, the canonization, and the patronages, however, are well attested from the early modern period.
