Biography
Ismael Perdomo Borrero was a Colombian Roman Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of Bogotá from 1928 until his death in 1950. He was born on 22 February 1872 in Gigante, in the Huila region of southwestern Colombia. After studies for the priesthood, including ecclesiastical formation in Rome, he was ordained a priest in 1896. His early ministry belonged to the Colombian church of the late nineteenth century, when the hierarchy remained closely bound to national political life under the Conservative order associated with the constitution of 1886.
In 1903 Perdomo was appointed Bishop of Ibagué and received episcopal consecration the same year. He governed that diocese in central Colombia for two decades. In 1923 the Holy See named him coadjutor archbishop of Bogotá, with the right of succession to Archbishop Bernardo Herrera Restrepo. Upon Herrera Restrepo’s death in January 1928, Perdomo became Archbishop of Bogotá, occupying the primatial see of Colombia and thereby becoming the country’s leading Catholic prelate. He was a diocesan cleric, not a member of a religious order, and he was never created a cardinal.
His long tenure as archbishop spanned years of church–state conflict and later rapprochement. Liberal administrations in the 1930s enacted reforms that reduced clerical influence in education and civil life, while Perdomo, as head of the Colombian episcopate, defended the Church’s traditional position. In the 1940s Conservative governments restored closer cooperation with the hierarchy. He remained in office through the outbreak of La Violencia after 1948. Throughout, the Archbishop of Bogotá functioned as a national religious figure as much as a local ordinary.
Perdomo died in Bogotá on 3 June 1950. He was succeeded as archbishop by Crisanto Luque Sánchez, who later became Colombia’s first cardinal. Perdomo has not been beatified or canonized, and no widely attested cult or official feast day is attached to his name. His career is of interest chiefly as that of a long-serving primatial archbishop in twentieth-century Colombia rather than as that of a canonized saint.
