Biography

István Sándor was born on 26 October 1914 in Szolnok, in the Kingdom of Hungary, then part of Austria-Hungary. He came from a devout working-class Catholic family; his father worked for the railways. After elementary school he learned a trade, training first as a metalworker and then as a compositor and printer, skills that later shaped his apostolate. In his youth he took part in parish and Catholic youth life and encountered the Salesians of Don Bosco, whose combination of skilled work and Christian education of the young drew him toward religious life as a coadjutor (lay) brother rather than as a priest. He entered Salesian formation in the later 1930s and made his first religious profession in 1940.

As a Salesian brother he was assigned to the community in Budapest linked with the Clarisseum, where he worked in the printing shop. He taught the printing trade to apprentices while sharing in the Salesian oratory: catechesis, recreation, and personal accompaniment of boys and young workers. After the Second World War he made perpetual profession. Those who knew him recalled an industrious, cheerful religious, attached to the spirituality of Don Bosco, the preventive system of education, and devotion to Mary Help of Christians. His vocation was that of the Salesian coadjutor: sanctifying skilled manual labor and using it as a means of educating the young in the faith.

From 1948 the Communist regime in Hungary suppressed religious orders, seized church institutions, and forbade most organized Catholic youth work. Sándor continued, as far as circumstances allowed, to support young people in the faith and to keep contact with Salesians. In 1952 the state security police arrested him. He was charged with illegal organizing and conspiracy against the people’s republic, accusations that arose from his religious and educational activity with youth. After interrogation and a closed political trial he was condemned to death.

He was hanged in Budapest on 8 June 1953, at the age of thirty-eight. After the end of Communist rule the Catholic Church in Hungary and the Salesian congregation advanced his cause. He was recognized as a martyr killed in hatred of the faith and was beatified on 19 October 2013 in Budapest; Cardinal Angelo Amato presided in the name of Pope Francis. Blessed István Sándor is commemorated on 8 June. He is remembered as a lay religious who joined professional work with the Christian education of youth and who accepted death rather than abandon that mission under a totalitarian regime.
