Biography

Short Description

Itta of Metz, also known in the sources as Ida, Ita, or Iduberga, was a Frankish noblewoman of the seventh century whose life is known chiefly through her marriage into the Pippinid family, her foundation of the monastery of Nivelles, and the early hagiography of her daughter Gertrude. Later tradition links her with the aristocracy of Metz in Austrasia and presents her as the sister of Saint Modoald, bishop of Trier, and of Saint Severa, an abbess. Contemporary evidence for her parentage is lacking. Medieval genealogists sometimes identified her as a daughter of Arnoald of Metz, but modern historians regard that reconstruction as uncertain. She belonged, in any case, to the high nobility of the eastern Frankish kingdom, a milieu in which landed wealth, court office, and patronage of the Church were closely intertwined. A birth year of about 592 is often repeated in later compilations, but it is a conventional estimate rather than a date fixed by a contemporary record.

She married Pepin of Landen, known also as Pepin the Elder, who held the office of mayor of the palace in Austrasia under the Merovingian kings Chlothar II, Dagobert I, and Sigebert III. In that period the mayor of the palace was the principal lay officer of the kingdom, and Pepin’s career placed the household at the center of Austrasian politics. The couple had children whose later roles are better documented than Itta’s own youth. Gertrude became a nun and the first abbess of Nivelles and was venerated as a saint. Begga married Ansegisel, a son of Arnulf of Metz; from that marriage descended Pepin of Herstal and, in subsequent generations, Charles Martel and the Carolingian kings of the Franks. A son, Grimoald, followed his father as mayor of the palace. Claims that Saint Bavo of Ghent was also their son rest on later legend and are not accepted as established fact. Through Begga, Itta is thus an ancestress of the Carolingian dynasty.

After Pepin’s death, generally dated to about 640, Itta turned the family’s resources toward monastic foundation. On the advice of the missionary bishop Saint Amand, she established a monastery on family land at Nivelles in Brabant. The house was organized as a community of women with an associated body of men, in the form of a double monastery common in seventh-century Francia. Gertrude was made abbess while still young, and Itta herself took the religious habit and entered the community she had founded. Frankish houses of this date often observed a mixed rule influenced by both Columbanian and Benedictine practice; later tradition describes Nivelles as Benedictine, and Itta is remembered as a Benedictine nun and widow-foundress. Hagiographical accounts, written primarily in connection with Gertrude, portray Itta as supporting the abbey’s early years, practicing charity toward the poor and toward pilgrims, and living out her widowhood under monastic discipline rather than remaining in the world as a powerful secular widow, a choice that was not inevitable for a woman of her rank.

Itta died at Nivelles on 8 May in a year traditionally given as 652 and was buried at the abbey. She was honored as a saint in the local cult of Nivelles together with Gertrude. Her feast day is 8 May. No record survives of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; like many monastic founders of the Merovingian age, she was recognized by local veneration and entry in martyrologies, a pattern often termed pre-congregation sanctity. The principal early narrative source for the family and the abbey is the Life of Saint Gertrude, composed in the later seventh century, not long after Gertrude’s own death. Itta herself left no writings, and independent biographical detail is scarce. Her historical significance lies in the foundation of Nivelles, which became an important religious center in the Low Countries, and in her place in the Pippinid lineage that, through Begga and Ansegisel, led to the Carolingian rulers of the Frankish world.
