Biography

Short Description

Ivan Georgievich Skadovsky, known in monasticism and the episcopate as Bishop Ioann, was a hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church who became one of the New Martyrs of the Soviet period. He was born in 1875 in the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire, in the Black Sea coastal region linked to the Skadovsky noble family, whose name was later given to the town of Skadovsk. Educated in the law at the Novorossiysk University in Odessa, he initially followed a secular career in the imperial civil service before being ordained to the priesthood in the years immediately preceding the First World War. He served as a parish priest in southern Russia during the collapse of the empire and the onset of Bolshevik rule.

The Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War devastated church structures in Ukraine and Crimea. Father Ivan remained with the canonical Orthodox Church headed by Patriarch Tikhon, refusing to join the state-sponsored Renovationist schism. In the 1920s he was tonsured a monk and consecrated Bishop of Kerch, a vicar bishop assisting in the Taurida diocese. His ministry as a bishop occurred under conditions of growing repression, with frequent arrests of clergy, confiscation of church property, and pressure to collaborate with the atheist state.

Bishop Ioann was arrested on multiple occasions in the 1920s and 1930s. He was eventually confined in the Solovki special camp, the notorious prison established on the site of the Solovetsky Monastery. In 1937, during the mass operations of the Great Terror, prisoners from Solovki were taken to the Sandarmokh forest in Karelia and executed by the NKVD. Bishop Ioann was shot there on 9 November 1937 and buried in one of the mass graves at the site.

After the end of Soviet rule, the Russian Orthodox Church glorified the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. Bishop Ioann (Skadovsky) was recognized as a hieromartyr. His story, like that of many bishops of his generation, is known only in outline because so many church archives and personal records were destroyed. He is commemorated as a witness who kept the faith amid the systematic attempt to eradicate Orthodox Christianity in the Soviet Union.
