Biography

Short Description

Ivo of Chartres (Yves de Chartres; Ivo Carnutensis) was a French bishop and canonist of the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and one of the principal legal minds of the Gregorian Reform in the kingdom of France. He was born about the middle of the eleventh century, conventionally around 1040, at or near Chartres. He received his early schooling in that city and later studied at the Norman abbey of Bec, where Lanfranc of Pavia was teaching before his translation to Canterbury. Some accounts also place him among the schools of Paris. His formation combined letters with the study of conciliar canons, papal decretals, and the Church Fathers, the materials from which he would later build his legal collections.

After his studies he entered the house of regular canons at Saint-Quentin in Beauvais and became its prior in the later 1070s. There he promoted the Rule of Saint Augustine and a common life of some austerity, and he gained a reputation as a teacher. In 1090 he was chosen bishop of Chartres, with the support of King Philip I of France and the confirmation of Pope Urban II. His episcopate was almost immediately overshadowed by the king’s repudiation of Queen Bertha of Holland and Philip’s union with Bertrade de Montfort, who was still the wife of Fulk IV of Anjou. Ivo refused to recognize the marriage as lawful, declined to take part in assemblies that blessed it, and was imprisoned by the king in 1092. He appealed to the papacy, was released, and remained a persistent critic of the royal household on this point, becoming a well-known defender of canonical marriage discipline against secular pressure.

Ivo’s lasting importance rests on his work as a compiler and interpreter of canon law. Three collections are associated with him: the Collectio Tripartita, the large Decretum of some 3,760 chapters, and the more compact Panormia, which circulated widely in the twelfth century. (Modern scholarship has questioned whether the Panormia is Ivo’s own recension or that of a close follower working from his Decretum, but the Ivonian corpus as a whole shaped legal study before Gratian.) In the prologue attached to these materials he discussed how canons of different age and authority should be read together, distinguished unchangeable divine precepts from ecclesiastical rules that admitted dispensation, and urged pastors to apply the law with discretion rather than mechanical rigor. Some two hundred and eighty of his letters also survive; they show him advising bishops, negotiating with the papal court, and applying legal principles to concrete disputes over elections, property, and clerical conduct.

In the Investiture Controversy he took a moderate line. He accepted that lay princes ought not to confer the spiritual symbols of ring and staff, yet he looked for settlements that would keep the peace of the realm and avoid schism. He corresponded with Urban II and Paschal II and with leading reformers such as Hugh of Lyon, and he was involved in the conciliar efforts of the period against simony and for clerical celibacy. At Chartres he sought to recover alienated church property, to discipline the cathedral clergy, and to strengthen houses of regular canons, including Saint-Jean-en-Vallée. Contemporaries described him as learned, severe in his own life, and unusually independent of both the French court and the more uncompromising Gregorian party.

He died at Chartres on 23 December 1115 (a few older authorities give 1116). He was venerated locally as a saint, and his feast is kept on 23 December; he was not the subject of a later formal papal canonization in the sense used after the twelfth century. His letters and collections remain fundamental sources for the history of the French church in the age of the Gregorian Reform and for the development of Western canon law in the generation before Gratian’s Decretum.
