Biography

Short Description

Ivo of Kermartin, also known as Yves Hélory, Saint Yves, or Saint Ivo of Brittany, was born on 17 October 1253 at the manor of Kermartin in the parish of Minihy-Tréguier, in the Duchy of Brittany. He was the son of Helori, lord of Kermartin, and Azo du Plessis, and belonged to the lesser Breton nobility. As a young man he was sent to study civil law at Paris and later canon law at Orléans. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts already present him as unusually austere for a student of his rank: he lived simply, fasted, and used what means he had to assist poorer companions and the destitute of the city. After completing his legal studies he returned to Brittany and entered the service of the Church as an ecclesiastical judge rather than pursuing a purely secular career at the ducal or royal courts.

In the early 1280s he was appointed officialis, or diocesan judge, first in the diocese of Rennes and subsequently in his native diocese of Tréguier. In that office he heard cases in the bishop’s court and gained a lasting reputation for refusing bribes, for hearing the poor as readily as the powerful, and for defending widows, orphans, and others who could not afford counsel. This conduct earned him the popular title of advocate of the poor, which remained attached to his name after his death. He was ordained a priest around 1284 and thereafter combined judicial work with pastoral ministry, preaching, hearing confessions, and celebrating the sacraments in the countryside around Tréguier. He is traditionally numbered among the Franciscan tertiaries (Third Order of Saint Francis), remaining a secular priest rather than entering a cloistered or mendicant community. He declined higher ecclesiastical preferment and continued to live on his modest patrimonial resources, which he largely devoted to almsgiving and to the support of those who came to him for legal or spiritual help.

His manner of life in later years was marked by fasting, night vigils, and a deliberate poverty that struck observers in a man of noble birth and legal standing. He used his training to draft documents, plead, and settle disputes for people who otherwise had no access to the courts, and he is said to have given hospitality at Kermartin to the sick and the homeless. Toward the end of his life he withdrew from some of his official duties in order to give more time to pastoral care. He died on 19 May 1303 at Louannec, not far from Tréguier, and was buried at Minihy-Tréguier, the parish of his family manor. Reports of his holiness and of favors attributed to his intercession spread quickly in Brittany and beyond, and an organized cult grew up at his tomb within a generation of his death.

The cause for his canonization was taken up in the Avignon papacy. Pope Clement VI canonized him on 19 May 1347, on the anniversary of his death, after an inquiry into his life and reputation. He thereby became one of the relatively few thirteenth-century figures to receive a formal papal canonization in the fourteenth century. His feast is kept on 19 May. In Brittany he became a principal patron of the duchy; the pardon of Saint-Yves at Tréguier and Minihy, and his place in the older Tro Breiz pilgrimage circuit, long structured local devotion. Outside Brittany he was adopted as patron of lawyers, advocates, notaries, and judges, and also of orphans and abandoned children, in keeping with the tradition of his courtroom advocacy for those without protectors. Relics and a shrine associated with him have been venerated at Minihy-Tréguier and in the cathedral of Tréguier, and his iconography typically shows him as a priest in legal or academic dress, often with a poor client at his side.
